Should I focus on the keywords I am ranking for ?

Hi !

I am quite new to SEO, I am in the middle of a keyword research process and I have seen in Google webmaster tool that I am currently ranking in the 2nd page for some interesting keywords. My website is ranking much lower for all the other interesting keywords, I am operating in a competitive environment.


Should I try to optimize my pages for those keywords or should I keep looking for more promising ones ?

    Come up with some longtails for the keywords you are ranking for. Then create content around those. That will help you further establish authority in that micro-niche.

    Yes, if you're ranking for some decent keywords, focus on moving them up. Near the top of the first page of Google search results is where all the action is. If you're on page 2, you're getting close so why not try to push those keywords up?

    See which pages are ranking (it may or may not be the home page that ranks for a keyword). Focus on getting some good backlinks to those specific pages. That is, if the page that shows up in search results is www.example.com/my-inner-page.html, then get some backlinks that link directly to www.example.com/my-inner-page.html rather than simply to the home page.

    It all depends on the monthly amount of searches for each term and additionally whether the term is actually a buying keyword, and lastly your Return In Investment.

    By buying keyword I mean a keyword that can actually be monetized i.e "cat t-shirts" vs "funny cat".

    And by return in investment I mean how much you will actually be getting in turn for your resources used.

    If you were on the 2nd page ranking for a keyword that only is getting 10 monthly searches then it would be not worth the effort to spend so much resources ranking it to number one not unless this was a highly lucrative market which you could make 1000's of dollars per sale for example.

    But otherwise if you are just getting pennies on a dollar then it shouldn't be too much of a focus.

    If your other keywords are not that much more difficult to rank an are actually buying keywords then you should consider going with those

    Better try optimizing your content for LONG tail keywords just related to your main keyword (that you are currently on 2nd page). The ranking should come itself if you do a proper SEO!

    My advise would be that you rank your website for more than one keyword. The ones on the second page are easy to take to page one and then go for long tail keywords for fresh targets When you have traffic coming in from all over, it gives you more authority in the niche. You will see your website do surprising things on the serps... .

    I'd say focus on content. There are god knows how many ranking factors. Trying to rank for a set of keywords can backfire and knock you out of serp. Try to add more authority to your website by adding more quality content. I've observed cases where six months old posts would suddenly start to rank.

    Yes, you can focus on those keywords you are ranking. However, look at those keywords that brings money in. What products are most buyers ordering from you? Are you ranking on that such keywords? If not, go compete and rank for such keywords. Do not settle for keywords that only bring you traffic maybe for sole information (for the readers). If you intend to gain profits online, work on those that bring them.
