Content Duplication Question

Probably a stupid question.

Say I am building a website and I am looking to SEO it. The long term game plan is to get one site up and running, test and tweak it for SEO purposes, and then make a bunch of different ones in other cities around the country. So basically this first one is a template so to speak. Where ideally all I would have to do it change out certain words to fit the city I'm in. Everything else is the same.

Would I be penalized for duplicate content? I assume I would be.

Thank you.

You are going to get answers from both sides on this one.

So, I may as well put my two cents in...

As long as the content DOES NOT reside on the same domain, you will not be penalized.

(That's the camp I belong to.)

But, if you're concerned and not convinced... you could build Wordpress sites and use the WP-Uniquifier (or whatever it's called to "hide" content on the fly (that is, as the server is serving them up to the user.)

There was a WSO for that plug in and I bought it. I'll see if I can find it.

    Warmly,

if there are duplicated contents... Before Google will implement penalty, google will look first the site age. In that way, search engine can tell who posted first...

Google has NEVER given a penalty for duplicate content. They have devalued one of the site's content though.

It really does not have to do with page age anymore. Its more of who has the highest trust rank

        a brave statement.

Google can and do apply manual penalties. Some of these have undoubtedly been because they believe someone has copied content from elsewhere with the direct intention of manipulating serps.

While there may be no such thing as an automatic 'duplicate content penalty', the simple fact of the matter is that search engines want to give users a good experience. Showing page after page of links to what is essentially identical content is almost a definition of a bad user experience, so modern engines work hard not to do it.

Which is why that news story on Yahoo shows up on Yahoo's site in the serps, not your little blog.

Call it a penalty, call it a lack of bonus, call it whatever you like. The days of just uploading copied stuff willy nilly and making money off it are coming to an end, rather fast. It worked great in 2003. Things, unfortunately, have moved on, as they say.

My statement said nothing about breaking copyright laws. It was about duplicate content. And manual editing would only happen if you are turned in by someone in the event of breaking copyright laws.

and as far as why it shows up on yahoo,,, its because the trust rank is higher

the word "devalued" isnt it already a penalty? though you're not banned but they diluted your results, pushing it down.. ..

No devalued is far from a penalty.

A penalty means BY no means will you be at number one.(depending on the query). You can have virtually NO value at all and still rank number 1 based on the query.

Its an automatic minus 10, 50, 950 etc. A minus 30 is sitewide, and does not depend on the query. You will not be above position 30 for ANY query. Minus 50 usually is a phrased based penalty for overusing anchor texts from the same domain. (usually occurs because of forum signatures etc.) With a minus 50 you can still be at number 1, BUT not for the anchored keyphrase.

Google uses a number of criteria to determine if duplicate content is malicious or not. By malicious I mean, used with the intent to increase your ranking in the SERPs.

    1. They compare the content. (of course)
    2. Discard certain sites such as blacklisted IPs or link farms.
    3. They look at creation times, time of discovery, how topical the site is, and links to and from.

If duplicate content is found malicious it is removed. If the content is found to be non-malicious it will be given a subordinate rank to the original content.

Thanks to everyone's posts. Although it seems digidoodles was right, getting arguments from both sides.

My viewpoint on this is the same as what blueice posted. It makes sense. But then again, whether it makes sense and how Google sees it are two different things.

    Thanks again to everyone.

    Ok, another duplicate content question.

Lets say I have a site where a bunch of posts/pages overlap. For example, let's say I have a marketing site. I break up the direct mail process, having different pages for different parts of direct mail (copywriting, headlines, mailing lists, envelops, etc.). Then there is a page that is a step by step process from start to finish. Of course it will have content from the other pages in this one page.

Will this hurt in the SERP's?
