Now that PageRank is no more, what do you use to benchmark?

I have to admit that I liked the convenience of PageRank. I just installed a browser plugin and I could easily see if the site was ranked 0 - 10. It also allowed me to tell if I was using the right method if the site moved from say 0 to 3 in a few weeks or if it dropped to 1 from 4 (it happened to me).

Now of course, it is difficult to tell how well a page ranks in Google and other search engines.

I am wondering what SEO folks are now using to determine how well a site is ranking and how to determine if the site has improved or lost rank during a certain period.

I noticed that PageRank has not completely gone away, but I have set up several sites in the past few months and a few are getting decent traffic, which I have seen in Google Analytics, and yet, none of them display a PageRank.

I have found myself relying more and more on Google Analytics for my sites, but I was wondering what other methods are being used to determine how well a site ranks.

    I switched my evaluation methodology to PA/DA about a year and half ago. Works well for me.

    What really matter is how your site change in ranking for keywords you can monitor this change in your webmaster tool and you do not need to care about any other factor

    Well PR is gone but that doesn't mean it's gone completely. There is still a bit metrics you draw from using it. But it's not completely reliable. Use PA/DA from moz.

    The important ranking factors to consider are Page Authority (PA) and Domain Authority (DA). You can check these metrics for a site with Open Site Explorer by Moz.

      PageRank is not, nor was it ever, an indicator of rankings.

        Since I placed many 0PR pages ahead of PR1, 2,3 and 4 routinely, I'm going to say what Mike said: PR don't have nothin' to do with ranking.

          PR = Page Rank
          Rank = Ranking

          Whether or not you want to care about it is up to you.

          I would not go that far. It is a ranking factor in the algorithm, but a higher PageRank than another page does not guarantee you will outrank that page.

            Let me repharse: PR, by itself, doesn't seem to do much. If it did, I would not see that many PR0 pages outranking PR4 pages with both of them going for the keyword, as evidenced by the use of keyword in title and URL.

            And, it seems to me, it's used to have help directly. Now, it seems if I get a link from a page with PR1, that counts more than a link from PR0, but the PR of my page can stay at 0 and I can still move to the top just as easily as if it were 1 or 2 or 3.

            My experience. And without doing A/B testing.

    what you really need to focus on is your rank positions and avoiding google penalties by focusing on building trust to your website.

    Thanks to everyone for the advice!

    I am going to start using the Moz Open Site Explorer tool bar.

    I had a feeling that PageRank had nothing to do with rankings. However, for the past few years, I noticed that my sites with a PR of 1 and higher had much more traffic than those with a 0 PR. I also found PR helpful when I checked out competitors sites.

    Thanks again for all your help.

    I would definitely not rely on only PA and DA as they both can be manipulated by spam. They are still useful metrics to potentially identify good domains but I would not solely rely on them.

    Trust Factor and Citation Flow from Majestic should be used in combination with PA/DA. TF is much more difficult to manipulate with spam. Also, a low CF to TF ratio is often a good sign that it has not been manipulated with spam.

  • I use SEO MOZ tool bar (PA/DA) and Screaming Frog

    No SEO tool is necessarily accurate but it's the best we have. Since we don't have direct access to G-Gods data. Nothing can be developed to a pin point accuracy.

    These threads are funny because there's not a single person here that would turn down a legit PR link in 2015.

      Very true. Always aim for high PR stuff regardless of what G-God is doing.

    I had no issue since a year, checking CF/TF ratio to filer out spammy domains and for those left to hand checking for registration, drops, history, backlinks and anchors...
