URL Structure

About to start a new project and was wondering which would be optimal regarding URL's

For example:

a site about dogs

domain: dogs (dot) com - targeting the keyword "dogs"

page one: dogs (dot) com/brown - targeting the keyword/phrase "brown dogs"

-or-

page one: dogs (dot) com/brown-dogs ?



which would be optimal in terms of the big G, I am inclined to try the first example?

I have had minor success with my other pages but have never targeted a specific niche like this before.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

  • In my experience "page one: dogs (dot) com/brown-dogs" is a better option. Google lies alot of value on keyword placement.

    "dogs brown" is another thing as "brown dogs"

    and it is never bad to have 2 times your main keyword in the URL.

    Wouldn't this be the same as your page name being brown? If you're targeting "brown dogs" your page title should be brown-dogs.
  • I would go with using dogs(dot)com/brown-dogs because it has more of the word "dogs" and specifically "brown dogs" in that order? Just don't overdo it because google might considered it as spam.

    In the title page use "brown dogs" for that specific page. Also, start the first sentence on the page with words "brown dogs".

      I am aware of the basic seo practices e.g title, url, h1, h2

      I was just wondering if infact the more natural way of listing the URL

      dogs.com/brown would be more acceptable with the big G, I read somewhere that overdoing your keywords in the url and title pages is wrong.

      Like if my url was dogs.com/dogs and title was Brown Dogs | Dogs, would that not be a bit spammy?
  • Take this advice: In SEO, the best strategy isn't either/or, it is usually both.

    By this, I mean there's no reason not to do both. Seriously, in the time it takes to post to this thread, you could have written a second page of content about brown dogs.
  • I don't think it matters much what comes after the main domain dot com, but I tend to think dogs dot com / dogs-brown might be better. I'm no expert though. I think Kurt has it right.
