Weighing up competition

If the first page competitors only have the keyword in their page title tags and not in the url, does this automatically leave a large opening in getting ranked for the term? Only the first result displays the keyword in both the title tags and the URL.

Thanks in advance

No, not neccessarely. There are other factors to check, for instance the number and quality of backlinks thoses top sites have.

Would I be right in thinking that back links to the actual page in question hold a lot more weight than domain backlinks, I am using market samurai and I seem to be noticing a pattern.

Hey Dimebag, yeah it's called pagerank because the big G ranks pages rather that websites. I like to use SeoQuake - extension for Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox browsers to analyise the competition for any given keyword.

I think most importantly though, you must check out WHO is ranking for a keyword that you are trying to rank for. For example, if it is Amazon, Ebay and other big hitters you are going to have a hard time beating them. However if you see ezinearticles and squidoo lenses in the Serps, they will be much easier to outrank.
