I think some people use SEO just for the sake of ranking, but I believe SEO should be used as a means and not the end.

SEO should be used correctly with a good content marketing strategy, lead conversion, and monetization.

I know some SEO companies just focus on ranking, but I think a better approach would be to focus on lead generation, making the money come in, and providing value for the end user.

What do you guys think?

That's fine but hand holding & running another persons business cost extra.

I wish I could find a reliable SEO company that was affordable...I'm barely scraping a living for my family in the trailer park sitting on 150+ CPA websites!

Just remember that no one but Google truly knows what goes into Google's search algorithm, so in other words SEO companies are just going off best/educated guesses.

IMO they're a complete waste of money - you can pick up all you need to learn about SEO in just a few hours around the web.

Also my recommendation: why run 150 websites if none are paying off? Look at all of them objectively from an ACTUAL sales, traffic, and profit perspective, dump the ones that aren't performing, and focus on one or two that will work.

Well, to be honest, SEO was never about just ranking. The idea was to get good rankings in order to generate leads and increase ROI.

SEO is never free of cost.

    -Keyword analysis
    -internal structure settings
    -content structure setting
Everything costs a lot of time to find the right ballance which is at the same time apealing to readers and crawlers.

After that: Networking and Linkbuilding, creation of High quality content where you spend only on research 2-3 days, just in order to generate one article which has value (not talking about visual editing of the article, which can take a few more days).

Guestblogging, Social Media engagement, creation of Linkbaits...

As you see, everything but everything costs time, and time is money, if you spend it your own or hire some professional and pay for his time, it will cost.

Main purpose of SEO is to reach a larger audience by targeting weak competition possitions which have a large search volume, beside of that SEO (Linkbuilding) in a decently prepared campaign can be used as means to rank high for a very competitive keyword. And the result is that you content is getting readers, that you have visitors for your funnel - Exposure of your website.

"Search engine optimization" means nothing less but, work towards higher rankings in Search engines (google, bing, yahoo)

When you manage a company’s website, the most important thing to you should be conversions. Sure, rankings provide a certain level of exposure, but in order to get there, you must be integrating and executing a stellar strategy that provides a unique user experience. Pair this with the ability for crawlers to understand what your page is about, and you're looking at a successful Internet marketing campaign. Use a quality link-profile without spammy links and construct valuable, unique and original content to be successful online. Rankings will follow suit.

A website is the furthest reaching extension of your company, and conversions effectively measure the value of your site, rankings do not. The main goal of a website is conversions and increased sales or revenue. The first result for a query doesn’t mean users are clicking on that link. If your content—videos, pictures, and text—isn’t enticing enough for a conversion or a paying customer, then it won’t matter where you rank for a query.
