Just some advice for a young SEO newbie?

So I just have a few questions 
I have a site at youthdebates.org, with the main attraction being the forums. They're actually doing pretty well. We started in June and now have 160k+ posts from 3k+ users. When we started in June we were youthdebate.co.uk, and moved to youthdebates.org in September(ish). We also moved from myBB to XenForo forum software in early October. Basically, the site in its current form has been around since October 8th 2014.
Now I'd just like to know your opinions on where we should be in terms of organic traffic. We're getting around 30 'new' hits per day from all organic traffic according to Google analytics. I feel like for a site with 12,000 page views per day and 7,500 threads, 30 new hits per day is very low? We're getting most of our traffic from Facebook and word of mouth at the minute. We don't have any Google penalties that I know of, and would have no reason to have any. Is domain age an important factor?
Our site is in two main parts - Wordpress core and Xenforo forums. Will the Wordpress install in the root be impairing the organic performance of the forums, which are in the /forums directory?
Something I'm struggling with is keywords. I know you're supposed to pick a couple of keywords to aim at, but how do I aim for these? Where do I put them when I'm using a forum software like Xenforo? The only fields I really get to fill in are node title, description and URL. Do I try and strategically put the keywords in the description, or...?
Also, how do I go about getting some pagerank? We're still PR0, which gives me much sadness
To get some backlinks we tried partnering with some other organisations in our niche (youth empowerment), and did successfully get some, but they're all from PR0 and PR1. I feel like we're not getting any natural backlinks because nobody is finding us in search engines, and our users are mainly teenagers who aren't likely to mention and link to us elsewhere.
So, umm... any advice for a young whippersnapper?
