I run a site which a series of offers on the home page. Each offer has a 'more details' button which has more information about the offer, however, it is a dropdown box. Only once clicked will the more detailed information appear.

I've always though it worked well for the user, but now I don't see many around and wonder if it may be hindering the site's rankings?

I use a drop down on my homepage, IMDB which is ranked 47th in the world use it on their homepage site, they also use it on their Quicklinks on all pages to expand the related keyword content for maximum seo rankings as well as <h1> to <h3> all important internal related links via keywording.

I don't think it actually matters to Google. It's more of a "user ease of use".

    Here's the logic:
If your visitors don't bother to click on the dropdown (or don't know it's a drop down), they'll just leave without discovering your other content.

    Bounces DO matter to Google.
So, if your users don't see all the menu options, they may just bounce, thus affecting your Google ranking.

As a general rule, I try to keep my menus as simple as possible (no drop downs. Less than 5 options) so everything is clearly visible for the user.

That leads to more clicks, more views, and better Google search results.

    Hope that helps.

If you are going all to SEO... then the best is to have a full articles on your homepage... but this is also ok... just try to put your KW in first paragraph to make it easier for google to rank you (:

Look at the text version of your webpage, everything you need to know (text/links) is right there in plain view.

It really depends on the method you use for these "dropdown boxes". There was a very interesting discussion on another forum regarding this: http://www.webmasterworld.com/google/4701703.htm.
There is no official conclusion from Google about this, but it looks like Google does index the content that isn't show up on the page initially, but doesn't give it the same elevated treatment as content that always shows on the page.

My suggestion is the following: if you have important pieces of content in those "dropdown boxes" that can help you increase rankings - find another solution for displaying them.
