Hello,

I am looking for the things that one must NOT do when doing SEO. I am talking about the things that would get your website penalized and potentially delisted from search engines. In short, I want to know the big NO-NO's in SEO.

I think its easier to write about WHAT TO DO, than it is to write about what NOT TO DO. What not to do... keyword stuffing. back linking from bad sites. thin content. not including tags. focusing on one source of traffic IE Google. - there are plenty of other sources of traffic. DMOZ, Yahoo, Bing, AOL just to name a few.

Make it easy on yourself. Install Wordpress on your website. Install yoast seo plugin and review a few youtube videos to learn how to quickly set thinks up. This will put you ahead of most new internet marketers and some older marketers

According to my experience, we should not do over optimization and also we should not make the poor and low quality back links which will be very harmful for your website.

    1. Don't do over optimization of your website.
    2. Don't copy content for your website from other websites.
    3. Don't generate low quality backlinks.
    4. Avoid Back hat SEO.
    5. Don't put your links unnecessary on Q/A or forum sites. Put links where it seems to be useful and relevant.

    1-DO NOT buy links
2-DO NOT spam the forums, blog pages etc.
3-DO NOT use automated software for creating backlinks.

Avoid using Black Hat SEO such as the use of automation software, overstuffing keywords on your content, creating low backlinks and spamming and over optimization. Just keep everything balanced, ranking a website and building reputation takes a lot of time and dedication.

    Over optimization.

That includes building out a super nice looking site.
The key is not to overthink the process.

Google doesn't care what your site looks like, as long as it functions properly, quickly, and is mobile optimized (responsive).

That last one is HUGE in the ranking factors these days.

I agree with someone here saying that it`s easier to answer what to do, than what not to do with SEO...

I would recommend you not to do too much of SEO besides wp all in one seo or by Yoast... if you don`t know what to do.

Google made SEO really hard to hit for someone who doesn`t know what they are doing (:

Be careful of unrelated blog comments, keyword stuffing and overoptimization... maybe the best for you is to open web 2.0 properties and social media... all of them at normal rate... (google find it strange if you make 20, 30 backlinks in one day and then nothing for some period of time)

      Agreed with this here.

Who cares about the bazillion SEO follies that exist when they don't rank pages.

Focus on what matters, not what doesn't matter.

There are actually a lot of things you shouldn't do.
I know you are worried you may get your site penalized.

Below are some of the stuffs:

    1. Don't use spammy links, don't use Fiverr either.
    2. Don't use spun content, all your content must be unique
    3. Don't do keyword stuffing
    4. Avoid public blog network
    5. Always verify any information you come across on a public forum, most people are quacks.

There is on page SEO and off page SEO and to have a good SERP, both must be implemented and not just one. You can have alot of good quality backlinks but if your website is not SEO optimized, you won't have success. Alot of social media sites have a high PR ranking such as Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Youtube, etc. so take advantage of this. It is better to have a few high high quality PR backlinks than tons of spammy low quality backlinks that will hurt any chance you have. An excellent on page SEO tutorial is here

asking people on an internet marketing forum with differing philosophies and methodologies what the best SEO approach to take is the biggest 'big No-No'. by the time you get to the second page you'll be chasing your tail in 50 different directions and more confused than when you started. nevermind the fact that by the time your thread gets to the fourth page, it will have completely veered off course and the obligatory reference that doesnt have anything to do with nothing will be brought up. like shakespeare, batman or the hadron super collider.

You spend so much time reading about what you should do with SEO that it's hard to think backwards on this question. My experience leans more towards the writing side, but I guess my top 3 are:

      1. Irrelevant Content

Google has done a great job of shutting down the more notorious situation where a search for "grape juice" could land you on a spammy page that talked about diamond jewelry before trying to sell you on a workout ebook.

At the same time, however, it's not unusual these days to search and find content that's more relevant but obviously not as in-depth as it needs to be. Although I don't think that Google is necessarily asking for Shakespeare, abusing keywords via stuffing and the like isn't good SEO.

      2. Blackhat SEO Tactics

If I'm recalling the right person, I guess going Blackhat worked out in the end for John Chow. However I think a big part of that is because he eventually became too big for Google to exclude. Plus, an issue with Blackhat tactics is that the non-Google sites that might've driven traffic before are often taking steps to shut down shady marketing strategies. Like with Pinterest and their refusal to allow direct affiliate links (although to be fair, driving traffic to an offer isn't necessarily Blackhat).

In any case, at this stage of the game, Blackhat techniques are a no-go.

      3. Optimizing for Engines

This leans more towards my personal philosophy as opposed to anything concrete, but I think the trend has been towards user engagement when it comes to SEO although obviously domains and keywords still matter. On that note, I think that it's especially important to do on-page SEO with the reader in mind.

I guess this ties into my first point, but I thought it deserved its own heading simply because this bugs me the most as an end user.

This isn't comprehensive by any means, and obviously it's just my opinion. But judging by my own take and those listed by others, these seem to be popping up the most in this thread.

One I didn't see mentioned yet is - fill your site with affiliate links but offer no real value or content (according to Google Webmaster)
