Hi everyone,

Along with doing affiliate marketing I run a watch enthusiast site paneraicentral.com. For the longest time I used to rank in the top 5 for anything that I would put out Panerai related. Articles would be indexed quickly and rank instantly and it was a good time.

Flash forward to the end of October. All of a sudden my site dropped in ranking. Everything went from top 5 to rankings between 50-100 or sometimes not even being there. I have racked my brain reading on here and talking to buddies about what could have happened. All of my content is unique which should weigh nicely with google. I do take press releases and reword them with some commentary. I sped up my site a lot and using YSlow and GTMetrix I get great scores.

What's even weird is that I still rank #1 on certain keywords, for instance PAM785. But then something like PAM616 I don't even rank. So not really sure what to make of it.

At one point I was trying to start a forum on the site and I left it and didn't go back to it and when I came back I noticed a ton of spam links that I went in and deleted so there are non there anymore. I figure that might have had a negative effect on the site right now. The spam links look like they started in January 2015, much later then October 2014 when I dropped in ranking so not sure if that is the real reason all of this has happened.

Using webmaster tools I saw some domains that looked weird and put them in the disavow in my webmaster tools. When I look in Majestic I see a ton more links and anchor texts that are pharmaceutical related but there are so many domains and posts that are pointing back to my domain I don't know how to do anything about it. It would be so crazy to try and get all of these domains put into my Disavow text.

I am looking for any help I can get at this point. Why does Webmater tools not show all those backlinks that Majestic shows? What do you guys think caused the drop in the end of October? What would be the best course of action to getting into good graces with google.

I appreciate any insight that you experts can bring to the table on what I can possibly do.

Thank you in advance.

    Hello Op,

I suffered the same problem on October 2014. But I've fully recovered and I still rank very well.

You see, Google was rolling out an update of their penguin 4.1 back then and sincerely think that's what affected our site rankings.

What I first did was to disavow bad backlinks. I used Ahrefs not Webmaster tool.

Google doesn't display all the backlinks to your site in their WT page because of reasons best known to them. But I think it's to protect their algorithm from being manipulated.

Secondly, I began acquiring high quality backlinks to my site again using some broken link building techniques and guest posting.

Thirdly, just like before, I was dolling out high quality content to my blog. In December, my rankings started jumping up and now it's just normal as it was before the update in October.

So just follow suite. Your might take a little longer but keep on trying. Patience is always the key, believe me.

Thank you for your reply. I am in the process of trying to clean out all the links and get all the domains Disavowed so I can hopefully get back to normal.

I am still wondering what caused the drop since the links didn't come until much later. Curious to see what caused the actual hit.

You should also make building links a constant strategy of yours to make sure that spam links in the future have no possibility of hurting you. Increasing the amount of content you have will also help in this regard as well. If you do these two things, you will turn your site into an authority site, so Google will always have top respect for it.
Thank you very much for the info. I am definitely going to try and build up the links the best I can so that I have more positive juice so this can't hurt me as you say anymore.

So far this is what I took care of.

      - Turned off my forum where all the problems stemmed from when it got hit by spam because.
      - Deleted all the actual threads
      - Took all the links I found Majestic, and put about 1000 domains in the Disavow links text file to hopefully have Google give it no rank.
      - used the removed indexed tool in webmaster tools to remove any indexes of pages from the forum directory so those won't be there anymore.

Anything you think I am missing on that front?

So one thing I am still trying to figure out and I mentioned before is why on that day in October did it drop even though the spam links were not in place yet. Any way to find out?

Thanks a lot again for your information.

Get a paid ahrefs.com subscription and you'll be able to find out exactly when the spammy backlinks started appearing. They might have started appearing much earlier than you think.

Thank you. Is it much better than the report that I receive from Majestic? For free it's pretty detailed.

I had this problem, roughly around the time frame you mentioned, i paid for a link d tox, and do you know, i had only 1 spammy link that caused a drop from page 1 to page 4, link was removed, 3 weeks passed and i regained position,

Just shows you, 1 or 100 links can cause damage, i always keep an eye on my backlinks now, in my otherwise clean profile
