Hi Warriors,

As most of your already know - Google has updated its algorithm and according to this post on Official Google Blog - optimized anchor text inside a press release is now qualified as "unnatural links". They also advice marketers to make press release links nofollow.

On the other hand, many SEO's and marketers have proven this statement is not 100% true.

So my questions are:

1. Are you using dofollow or nofolllow links when doing press release distribution?

2. Are you using anchor text, brand name or naked URL's for thoose links?

3. Does anyone who use dofollow or/and anchor text rich links inside press releases has faced Google penalty or significant drop in rankings?

Thanks in advance

Never been an avid user of press releases, myself, but it would be an illogical move for Google (IMHO).

A lot of quality brands, products and people use press releases to get the word out. It's not a service used exclusively by spammers. Weird!!

As of my past experience all are ok until the myblogguest was banned. If they allow now press release, but tomorow they will ban those sites too.
Google only counts anything as spam and even they can't sit on one decision.

      Hi TeKn1qu3z,

I don't think Google will ban the press release sites ever, because some of the biggest news outlets in the world are using this service. I can't imagine sites like Yahoo! Finance, Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal to be banned. Also, most of the biggest brands have thier press releases distributed with rich anchor test in the past, so if G. start penalize these links....it doesn't sound logical.

If do follow link is allowed within a press release content there is a high possibility of being abused by other people through spamming content that are rich in keyword links. Its purpose is to manipulate rankings.

      Hi davidweb09,
That is not true, a big news websites like CNBC still give a dofollow link. The big question is how Google counts these links nowadays?

As others have mentioned, I think allot of press release sites have just made links nofollow by default these days. Mainly because of spam and abuse. The same type of thing was happening with wiki sites as well.. I think when it comes to those, a nofollow link is actually probably the better choice.

In my personal Press Release should be used only branding purpose and generating traffic. You shouldn't be worry about do follow or no follow, if you're getting good traffic from a press release and the link is no follow then also it's offering value for your business and website.

This barely matters. Dofollow or not, naked anchor or keyword optimized anchor, that's just ONE link and it won't really change anything.

What matters is your entire backlink profile. You need natural backlink anchor text ratio across the board and strong enough links to rank your page.

      I agree on that

The case is differnet here. If you are using a press release distribution service, you can get few thousand links from very authoritative websites, no just one link. I found many websites to rank on the top of SERP's on highly competitive niches with only press release links.
