Couple of questions having just submitted a couple of my sites to search engines, I notice I have no meta tag keywords defined in them! (oops)

First question, how many should I include? I'm sure I could think up thousands from my niche, not sure what the best practice is there

Second, I use master pages, so should I go to the trouble of adding different meta tag keywords to each page (to reflect each page's content) rather than just having one set which is used by every page (defined in the master page). I can see how the meta description would be best to be different for each page, not sure about the meta keywords

Hope this question makes sense and thanks for any answers

Meta keywords are no longer used by Google as a ranking factor, therefore it makes no difference if you add them or not.
If you want to add them in 2 - 6 is sufficient.

Good, individual meta descriptions for each page may help your clickthrough rate from the SERP's, especially as search terms matching the user query will get bolded,
there is no guarantee that Big G will use them in your listing, but you should still write a good cliffhanger if you can.

Google doesn't look at meta keywords tags anymore and I think Bing and Yahoo will follow. I would add "SEO by Yoast" plugin if your running wordpress. That is the best!

You should add zero. They provide no value.

You must add your meta description tag, if it does not exist, Google will take your rich snippets on your website.

For Meta title the recommended length is 60-70 characters while for the Meta description the ideal length is 150-160 characters.

If no Meta Tags exists, then add as soon as possible. Every should have a Meta description along with Meta tags if not then nowhere it will rank properly.

Even Youtube videos need a proper tagging method for ranking in SERP and yotube related videos.

Really? A site with no meta descriptions will not rank properly?

Maybe you should let Wikipedia know that they should start using meta descriptions. They seem to have a lot of trouble ranking.

You should add 2 important tags meta Title and meta Description. Another tag is optional.

I'm no SEO expert, but I think they still count for something. Just add a few, the ones you find the most important.

You don't have to worry about Meta Keywords because this is one of the outdated factor in search engine ranking. If you want to add them there is no harm but it is just for your reference, these are the keywords which I target for this page, that's it!

Meta tag is a great way for webmasters to provide search engines with detail about their sites. This tag provides a short description of the page. If they are important to your site, you can use different types of meta tags.

If you are talking on behalf of google than you should forget keyword tags. because google is not giving any importance to them.
