Hi all,

When you do a search for 'travel forum' on google.com.au the #1 result is a forum which i know was started after mine, and also has a lot less members, posts and threads.

Any idea how he made it to #1 so quickly and mine isnt even listed on the first page?
#search engine optimization #google #site #travel
  • It's not much use asking us to check the #1 result, because that may be different to anyone depending upon where they live and which Google datacentre their using, their search history, and their geo-targeted results.

I'm from Australia and the #1 result looks quite good to me, and the forum appears active. You'll need to give the specific URL as an example.

Well i didnt know thats. Thanks

When i search for it travelforum.com.au comes up as the number 1 result. I just happen to know that that forum was started a couple months after mine, so i was wondering how it got that result so quickly, but if it depends on all those other factors then they might be it.

Can i ask what site you used to search for this?
  • Yep, Google (AUS)
  • I see 343 backlinks for Asian Travel Forums & Ethos and 13 for travelforum.org. Nowhere near 9000. What tool did you use?

    • Yahoo Site Explorer, which is the best one to use.

I ckecked my links and i have about 100, yet when i last checked it was up around 800. Something weird seems to be going on...

EDIT - I think there is something wrong with Googles service today. I used a couple other sites and they all said my backlinks are about 1100, which sounds right

    • I seen some one point this out some what already. Check the sites that are linking to them and the sites you are linking to. If they are linking to higher pr sites anywhere in side the travel niche. If they have more links with in the niche then you do they will rank higher.

Also visit there site if you are using something where you can view there source code on the page. Check it and all of the image alt tags. If they blasted the keywords through out these alt tags they made sure to seo the site. Which is going to make it hard to take them over. Unless you start focusing on quality backlinks and better seo for your own site. Makeing just about everything on the site relate to your keywords.

I personally use a list of 20 main keywords for my sites. I use these keywords through out the alt tags. I also make sure to place the hardest to reach keyword in the first sentence of the page, title, and in the description. Doing so will help you increase your pr and seo. Every thing is about seo these days if you do not know it you really need to learn it.
  • know where its traffic and backlinks are coming from
  • Using third party SEo tool check their PR, BL and also average traffic.. Many are avialable in seologs .com, seobook .com and also linkvendor .com.. In SEO one of the main part is monitering the competetors
  • I think he has got more backlinks from authority sites. Specially from .au domains..

See thats the weird thing, i have nearly 1200 backlinks, and he has only about 300.

It must just be the fact that his URL is an exact keyword match
  • Hi tester,

The number of backlinks really don't weigh into the equation much. They did a while back, back in the days when creating 10,000 spam blogs with backlinks pointing to the one domain could google "bomb" the target site to the top of the listings, however google has changed their equations a lot since then.

It would come down to the quality of his backlinks, the relevancy of the sites he's receiving links from, and a number of things.

For example, if he had a single PR6 backlink from another travelling site, you could have 20,000 directory links and still not outrank him.

I checked his meta keywords and he only has 3 in there: travel forum, australian forum and australian travel forum. It must just be the google datacentre im using that causes his to be #1.

Anyways im still continuing with my SEO and about 26% of my traffic now somes from SE's.

Plus im trying to continually add content and build a community to attract visitors to sign up
