      This depends on the keyword you targeting. You can rank without backlinks for a keyword with no or low competition. On the other hand it is quite impossible to rank for a superhard competitive keyword like google. Even with 1000s of high quality backlinks you won't rank for such a term.

    You should concentrate on quality links rather than quantity of links, if you have 1000 irrelevant and low quality backlinks these are less important than 10 high quality and relevant backlinks. However you should try to build content based backlinks but your content should be unique and high quality.

    Don't go for quantity. Quality backlinks along with proper on-page SEO matters a lot.
    I have analyzed many competitor's backlinks in which some websites owned very few backlinks and even then, they have appeared on 1st page of the SERP.

    Also, can't predict Google's actual ranking factor.
    Just go for quality and follow Google Webmaster Guidelines.

    There is no right answer to this question, it all depends on so many factors. The most important one, in my opinion, is the quality of your backlinks. You can have a few great ones and be able to rank well, or you can have tons of low quality backlinks and not rank at all.

    There is no require number of backlink. You have do it regular basis. Like today you are doing 20 backlink for your site and next day and day after tomorrow no backlink this not a good way.. Increase backlink in a constant continuous way. I hope it will be much better.
