Links: Does it help to get links from non-niche sites?

It is very hard to get backlinks from companies in my niche because we are competing against one another. If my site is about dogs, for example, does it help at all to get backlinks from sites that have nothing to do with dogs?

How can I get links to help SEO in my narrow niche?

In my opinion which some may not agree because they listen to the "so" called gurus.

I would start by researching through your niche and find as many sites as you can manually through Google.

I would then start by looking at the metrics for example: Domain authority, Trust flow and Citation flow, Page Rank etc.

I normally start by guest posting to the sites which have the best Trust flow and domain authority as these sites will send good link juice to your site.

In my opinion guest posting is my best link building strategy because it just plainly works. I normally do 5 per month for my main site and I always see increases in ranks on all my pages and posts.

Just make sure you provide the website owners with good unique content.

Anyone who says guest posting is dead is talking rubbish

When you say guest posting, you are talking about on a blog? What if my niche has very few sites that have blogs?

Also, how/where do you view domain authority and trust flow?

Just to be sure, look at it this way: your website is about dogs. But have you try to think of dog-related niches? You don't have to get all backlinks from websites about dogs, you can try and get them from sites about 'dog food', 'dog owners', 'house pets' or even go further and look for 'how to raise children' and write a guest post about 'the effects of children growing up with a pet dog'.
I hope you get my idea!

There are numerous ways to build quality links:-

    1. Start your won niche blog and publish relevant and quality content.
    2. Create, Publish, and Promote your infographics.
    3. Create, Publish and Promote your PPT/PDT.
    4. Do business listings in niche directories.
    5. Do Video submission and promotion.

These all activities including guest posting can help you to generate quality links and increase your overall rankings.

Ideally, you want links from niche related sites. However, there is still a ton of value from getting links from non related sites, as long as they are authority sites. There's a reason why PBN and SAPE type links still work in producing top rankings.

Websites are not pages. Any page on any website can be related in less
      than 6 degrees of separation.

      Relevance is relative.

JCPenney is one niche. But it would be nice to get a link to a college
loan site from a dorm room page. And so on.
