Do local domains rank higher on Google (Yahoo, Bing, etc.) than .coms?

For instance, if you're a florist in Osaka, Japan, would you rank higher for floristosaka.jp or floristosaka.com?

Just helping a friend pick a domain name.

Of course local domains have a significant impact on the local engines. Say for google.fr any site with .fr extension is more likely to rank than any .com extension domain. Whenever someone types google.com in any country, they are redirected to the specific country specific extension domain. And it's very obvious that the local country specific domains are shown up at first in the SERP results.

It also depends on other factors such as your on-site optimization, your social media signals as well as backlinks linking to you.

But assuming everything else is the same except for the domain extension, then yes, it has a slight advantage.

So, all other things being equal, if there's a slight advantage to the local over the .com, you could use both and redirect the .com to the local... or vice versa.

After the Google local search algorithm its getting more important and obvious that local domain names get more priority but also depends on your future plan for the business. It may also be possible to follow some other search engines guidelines cause countries like China - Russia are using their own Search Engines and SEO have to consider their rules.

Many SEO factors affect the higher ranking of the website, the local domain does not have that much impact on the rank but yes it is some what advantageous.

It could well be that local domains have a slighter higher priority. But I agree that the biggest factor would be the onsite optimization.

Of course it helps. If you business market is limited to one country then its better to choose local domain instead of .com

If you're targeting internal audience I would prefer .com domain. Even if you rank in other countries with .jp domain, you will receive low CTR as I have experienced it.

Local domain help in terms of Geo-targeting. Recently, Google has stated that local domains help them to decide which content is appropriate to each market. Hence, it actually reduces the effect of content duplication.
