The Relevancy of Backlinks ... It Matters!

So ... I started doing what many here do - build my backlinks. But, it wasn't until I got a link on the "Pianoworld" website that I moved from being #20 for the search term "piano lessons" to #6!

That's right. I took an ad out and it's on all the pages at Pianoworld. After a month and a half, Google took notice.

The lesson here is Google wants "relevant" backlinks and their algorhythm accounts for this.
#search engine optimization #backlinks #matters #relevancy
  • Thank you for sharing this example.

Google reward quality and relevance ... no need to try and outsmart them. Just work with their quality thresholds in mind.

  • OH NOES, you're using PAID LINKS! Google is going to send your site from #20 all the way down to #6 now! Don't use any more paid links, otherwise you may get beaten down by Google all the way to #1.

    • Some people do amaze me!

However i should speak for myself as i automate most of it or outsource it now! Much easier lol

  • You don't say how many back links you did before you put up that ad. I would be suspicious that this one ad was responsible for all of your move. I don't know how long it took Google to notice your other back links, it may have been the 45 days that it took for you to move up the search results. Frankly, I am highly suspicious that all of your results are due to that one paid ad, and none of it is due to your other back linking exercise.
  • Yes that is good example, google always give priority for related backlinks.

  • Okay a quick question, if the relevancy is really so important, why spammers fill all the blogs and forums with out an iota of relevancy!
i am really pissed the way and the range of massages i get in my own blog, i have internet marketing related blog and site, and i get all health growth hormones, forex, etc types of posts
  • Yes relevancy does matter. But getting heaps of great links from random sites unrelated to your links also help!

So any link is a good link in short. =]

    • Interesting thread in general here.

Funny thing ... .edu and .gov links seem to be some of the most cherished by most anybody. If relevancy is sooooo .... errrr ... relevant, than why .edus/.gov's - how many marketers have products/keywords relevant to those?

Also, this question comes from the context that the original poster was CLEARLY talking about a link from a "realtive site" - not just relative anchor text of his link.

I constantly see comments like ... 1 relative link on a high pr page is worth 100, no make that [ insert your grossly over exxagerated # here ] backlinks on non-relevant sites of low PR.

My personal results and to a great degree - Angela Edwards, and Pauls results .. and a growing number of other marketers results - sure seem to fly in the face of these ironclad rules out there.

  • Absolutely true! You can have 2k irrelevant backlinks and have no results, one PR4+ relevant backlink and have great results!

    • How do you define a relevant backlink? The anchor text of the link itself or the site it's on being relevant?

  • relevant is good, but as many as possible is good too :p
  • There are two things about back-linking:

    Relevance and Authority

IMO, relevance weighs more as compared to Authority but it may be the other way around for others.

The reason for me to claim this is the behaviour of the Search Engines especially G.

The real point behind G success against other Search Engines is the 'accuracy' of the results fetched for a particular word. So, I deduce that G will be more inclined towards the 'relevancy' of a link more than a 'non-relevant authority' site.

    Just my .2 pence
  • I agree with you. Relevancy is the most important factor in backlinks building. You must choose good relevancy sites instead of buying backlinks everywhere.
  • Relevancy helps, but its not the whole story.

This is what Eric Ward reckons:

10% of the process is about marketing.
    40% is about persistence.
    20% is about relevance.
    20% Is public relations
    10% Common sense

And guess who is virtually the only person that Matt Cutt's from Google has said has the most correct approach to linkbuilding? Yep you guessed it.

So from the horses mouth then, relevancy is around 20% of the total factors Google takes into account.
