Due to some reasons (I won't bother you with details), for few days I wrote down number of pages which google has indexed from my site. I was doing site:www.mysitename.com everyday and I wrote down the number of pages that google returned. Here is the chart for those days

7/15 - 10,200 pages
7/16 - 10,600 pages
7/17 - 11,400 pages
7/18 - 12,900 pages
7/21 - 13,000 pages

but today, instead of increasing the number...it decreased
7/22 - 11,900 pages

I have about half a million pages on my site, and I was happy that google would be able to index all of them in a year or so, but why did it de-index pages?

How does that work?

Half a million pages?? That is some site...

I have not run a site with more than a few thousand pages, but I have had discussions with people with much larger sites. The consensus is that you are fortunate to get 10,000 pages indexed. Don't count on Google ever indexing all 500,000, unless your site is PR3 and there are authority links in to all of the 500,000 pages!

      Hi jkiley,

That is standard pattern I see on all of my sites. The number you see listed is an estimate and they sometimes include duplicates in the estimate which eventually get filtered out.

The actual true number of pages indexed has probably grown steadily.

yes I agree with you and add that datacenter is not the best to track backlinks off of.

yeah one of the reasons why pages de-indexed are duplicated contents of pages...imagine half a million pages???!! that's a lot x_o

wow. I have no idea how you can have so many pages, must be a great site... or a recipe site.. or something.

But the way I see it is your lucky to get that many indexed, I've heard of worse stories and ppl getting a lot less pages indexed.
