When search for keywords and long tails is it ok to write some in the medium competition category, instead of looking for just the easy ones??

Just wondering in terms of whats better.

First of all the keyword wich gives you better result is target long tail. As you said , search for medium competition is good but it is not the only thing to focus on. Add these things: market demand that means do many people purchase; commercial viability that means do marketers make adverstings about this product; competitive intelligence that means if searching in google my keyword do I have lot pages write about this. If no I have gold.

Its helps to choose which keyword is best suite for business and make the comparison between different keywords.

  For long tailed keywords competitions may not be high. However, it is beneficial to include moderate competition as low competition tends to have very low search volumes. Hope this helps.

If you really want to search good long tail keywords or buyer keywords you can use Keyword Shitter - The Bulk Keyword Tool which is really helpful to find free suggestions of long tail keywords. You can use this tool for different anchor text variations in link building.
