Meta Question!

Hello everyone,

I am building out a website and the theme comes with a built in SEO program. I am somewhat new to the concept of SEO and just want to make sure I am doing everything correctly.

I know this question will make most of you laugh at me and think I am stupid but I would rather ask than make assumptions and potentially hurt my site by making the wrong decision. When creating pages and posts the theme I am using asks me to type out a Meta Title, Meta Description and Meta Keywords. Should these be different for every page and post or the same as the Meta Title, Meta Description and Meta Keywords that I entered for the site when I was doing my theme setup? In other words do I need to customize every page and post or do I need to make it uniform throughout the entire site?

Thanks in advance!

  • Yes, do keep it relevant to the web page that you're typing it for. But don't try to artificially manipulate it. Just ask yourself how would you type it if SEO wasn't a concern and you only wanted to attract people to read it... Then, throw in your keyword/phrases in a way that makes sense.

This is the only way to do on-site SEO. Technical knowledge + common business sense

    • Thanks,

My real concern is this: Let's just say for this example that my main Keyword is Cross country running and the whole purpose of my site to provide information, knowledge and tips on cross country running.

My objective is to get ranked for the keyword "cross country running" but I also want to get ranked for a long list of secondary long tail keywords as well. I understand that when I am setting up the the meta title and meta description for the site I will use "cross country running". Now let's also say I have 200 relevant secondary key words related to cross country running and plan to write an article focused on each secondary keyword.

I have written my 1500 word article on one of my secondary long tail keywords "proper stretching techniques that every cross country runner should use", when I go to publish that article on my site the theme asks me to fill in the Meta Title, Meta Description and Meta Keywords. Do I use the same Meta Title, Meta Description and Meta Keywords that I already entered for the site or do I fill this information in pertaining only to this article focusing on the secondary keyword?

I hope that isn't too confusing!

    • Yes you need to set title, description and a target keyword for every page of your site. And these settings should be appropriate to the content of the web page and focus on the keywords according to your target audience. This title will be displayed in SERPs.

  • Meta should be relevant, but different for each page. Many sites I've seen have their site's title at the meta title, which is great if you only ever want to rank for one keyword set.

    • Meta details are important search engine ranking factor. Meta Title and Meta Description should be different for each page. They should be relevant for your web pages.

  • Title tag is obviously an important factor. Not only does Google use it, but that's usually the first thing a potential visitor sees in the SERPs.

Meta description is not a ranking factor. You can write something that summarises the article and/or might increase the clickthrough from the search engine. However, Google is pretty good at taking the relevant part of your post, which actually might be more persuasive since it's directly related to the stuff that the user is searching for.

Meta keywords only matter if you're targeting something that's not Google or Bing, or if your website is located in the year 2008 and you happen to own a time machine.

    • Meta title has not been used since 1997.....

So you want to try again to showcase your SEO knowledge?

  • The meta keywords, meta description and mate title should have slight changes only on the basis of content available in that respective page. As mostly all pages will have the related content it would be enough to made slight changes in all pages.

    ANSWER:

-Meta title: the same as your article's title e.g. "proper stretching techniques that every cross country runner should use".
-Meta description: Describe the article's content + add in a variation of your main keyword e.g.'cross country runner'
    - Meta keywords: Just use variations of your targeted phrases
