The sitemap needs to be XML that's formatted in particular way. This is something you can learn by googling it.

Why don't you ask the SEO guys in your company? I'm sure they can do a few clicks on their tool of choice, and you've got the problem solved almost instantly.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

    What's your excuse?

As others have mentioned, your sitemap needs to be XML format and not HTML.

You can use this website to try and convert your HTML sitemap into an XML sitemap automatically.

Make sure you are trying to create a real HTML sitemap (consists of just a bunch of links and nothing else ) and not the normal webpage.

Yes for Google webmaster one needs to use xml sitemap with sitemap.xml format which is the only one supported by Google..There are softwares like xml-sitemaps.org which can help in creating xml sitemaps.

It's always better to use a XML sitemap or a simple text file that has links to various sections or pages on your website.

So true. I've been fooled by SEO and PPC "pros" in the past and that's why I am so hesitant finding a website developer now that I need one.
