I want to teach a small business owner about SEO and instead of writing paragraph after paragraph of content I would rather point them in the right direction with the latest local SEO guide and add my own input as I go.

What is the best local SEO guide, which contains current information (as of April 2015)?

Only free, I am not interested in buying Google Sniper or something.

  • How can I learn these guides which will help my business to improve in local places where i live or my business situated ?

    • The last Moz Local Search Ranking Factors we did was in August.

But it's considered the Bible for Local Search and is still pretty accurate since it came out right after Pigeon.

Local Search Ranking Factors 2014 - Local SEO and How to Rank in Google - Moz

But it's pretty complicated and definitely not step-by-step.

Here is a simplified version from 2013: Top 20 Local Search Ranking Factors: An Illustrated Guide - Moz

At the Local Search Forum I pretty much collect all the top resources I find and to my knowledge there is not really a great free guide that's up-to-date.

Even many of the paid training programs are out of date because Google changes so much and most don't keep up with all the changes after they complete their course. OR don't really specialize in Google Local Search enough to really keep up with or understand all the changes.

I don't offer a Google Local 101 course. All my training is pretty advanced. So I would love to find a good beginner guide, since I get requests all the time. Just have not found one yet.

  • Write a beginner guide and release it for free, then try to upsell people to your advanced training! :-)

    • I really should. Lots have requested. But I don't have time and 101 is not my focus and does not even interest me. It's needed, it's just not something I would personally do.

I like helping experienced pros get to the next level. There is just so much to local that I don't think anyone could do a course than goes all the way from 101 to advanced, so I focus on the advanced info.

OHHHHH I just thought of a good one for you guys. It's not step by step but it's pretty comprehensive.

Sorry, keep forgetting about that one. Just ran into it again, so wanted to share.

  • i think moz blog is potential.
  • Check out Local Client Takeover. It's free while they're ironing out the bugs. I spent last week looking at it, and it's definitely worth $5,000.

They bust down ranking in the 7 pack, getting organic YouTube rankings, ranking organic locally, buying traffic, generating leads to your own business, and hacking the processes so you can move forward.

I'm not associated with them, but if they had an affiliate program I'd be pushing it.

    • I don't understand what Citations are exactly. Is it the name of your business written in the text of another website or is it about the anchor text of the link to your site?

  • Do you have a list of steps that you would do for a local SEO client, after keyword research is completed?

    Step 1: Title tag
Step 2: Internal linking within content
Step 3: Google Local (Map) listing
Step 4: Backlinks from business directories with citations
Step 5: Create 3 new pages every month to give Google fresh content (blog, fresh articles)
Step 6: 1 PRWeb press release every month

    What else?

  • GMB stands for Google My Business? What violations? Is it like errors in Webmaster Tools?
  • The members area on LCT works for me, I just tried for you.

May be your browser or something.
  • Step 7, find local blogs, build a local blog network
Step 8, sell AdWords management, setup campaign if possible.

  • I used to face some serious problem while writing a content especially while to write a strange topic. If your suggestion will help then it will be very good for me.
  • Check out Phil Rozek's site at localvisibilitysystem.com He has a lot of great free information about ranking local websites and Google Local.

    • I have a friend that works with you guys. Surprised you're trying to link build here...

Anyway, no it's not the most important thing. In fact, I do a "7 pack analysis" on my blog and citations usually play just a tiny role in why things rank the way they do in local.

Some businesses have no consistency with NAP data in their citations, some have very few citations yet they're blowing the competition out of the water.
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • So what is the most important ranking factor? Still backlinks?
    • [2] replies
    • There isn't really a single most important. These days I don't think there is any ONE thing that really moves the needle.

Here are the top things in general, but a bunch of steps and issues inside each one.

      1) Google+ Local listing data quality and optimization. (Bunch of different things you need to do right, bunch of things that can get you in trouble. But all depends on industry, type of listing etc.)

      2) On-site Local SEO with all the right "local hooks". Whole bunch of different elements to do it right.

      3) Citations. Quality counts. Again tons of different issues with each.

So those are the main things. Backlinks I've never done for local. In the past they weren't really necessary for local except in super competitive markets. But now with the Pigeon algo they may be a little more important. BUT still does not matter if you don't do 1 and 2 right.
    • Of course back link is the main factor of a ranking. so increase the back link and build up your ranking.

    • I personally would never risk a local client's ranking doing a Fiverr SEO backlink gig. I would never trust anyone do backlinks for a local client.
