Hello guys,

You may take a look at this free plagiarism checker - http://www.copyleaks.com . This web tool detects online plagiarism.
Why it is important to SEO?
Because when google find duplicate content he choose to relate to one of the page and abandons the other. And then there will be situation that you wrote an article someone stole it from you and enjoys the google ranking for it.

Actually, it seems to be a piece of crap.

It says one of my articles about ab machines has been copied. The copy is all about guitars and Jimmy Olsen's blues and sound distortion.

They use a lot of the words I used: the, are, have, and, or, is, was, had, has, to, also, I, you, he, she, it, we, they, them, his, hers.

Damn thieves! Don't they know I own the pronouns in the English language!

I do not know what the rest of the commenters drool at. This tool is really crap.

I was using http://www.content-watch.ru/ for years. It is free, even after registration, and it shows copied parts of the text, as well as the sites of the origin. It finds the origin pretty easily - by the creation date, as obviously if your content is published 6 months later than the other article - yours is a copy.

It also provides other services, like website API analysis and website content check for plagiarism.

Good for me that I know Russian, as this tool is the only one which seems to be working out there. It works for English texts too, of course.

So funny. SEO and plagiarism? Why would you need to check for plagiarism?

Are you people hiring lawyers and going to a court in the United States?
No? Then why do you need a "plagiarism" checker?

You people do not know the definition of plagiarism.

It would be hard to make a plagiarism checker. You are not a teacher, right?
You are not checking your students work that they are passing off as their
      own, right?

In fact, a student could use your material with no problems if they followed
      guidelines.

What would you need to check for plagiarism anyway?

I can copy and use your content and not have to worry about you suing me
for plagiarism. I can follow the rules set forth by the United States. And
they are plenty of ways to use copied content.

      Copied content is not plagiarism.

Think you missed the point... The main reason is to check for duplicate content for SEO purposes.. Know one cares if they rip off anyone's content. They care if they have duplicated content or they have a writer who has sent them copied crap.

I think you missed the point.

If you order an article (500 words for $1.99) you're going to get crap, and copied crap at that.

Duplicate content is not your problem.

Besides, I can take an article that's appeared on 77 sites, SEO'd, send links to it, make it rank.

Seems people misunderstand the duplicate content idea entirely.

IT IS NOT EASIER TO RANK A 100% ORIGINAL ARTICLE THAN ONE THAT'S BEEN COPIED. IT'S NOT HARDER, EITHER.

I know because I've ranked articles that I had on other sites.

Duplicate content is a copy of an article that's on the same site. You should really have some idea what's on your site, or search if you don't remember.

As DABK said: for couple of dollars you're going to get copied crap in any case. It's just crap that's been sort of rewritten just for you.

Unique means nothing if your article is the n000th uninspired minimum effort piece of crap about a common topic. And even if it is, you can still get it ranked.

          Duplicate content is not plagiarism.

Duplicate content can, and is, very beneficial for SEO.

Every big site does it. If duplicate content was BAD for seo, then
amazon would be in the tank. Ditto gasbuddy, ebay, NYT, yahoo,
google, reuters, AP, b&n, best buy, wikipedia, zillow, kayak,...etc.

Want to see duplicate copied content in action?

In 2000, Bill and Hillary Clinton owed millions of dollars in legal debt.

Search for sites that have that....

Actually, store items is one of the exceptions Google makes to duplicate content: https://support.google.com/webmaster...er/66359?hl=en

I guess the Bill and Hillary Clinton mention is about press releases. Of course press releases can and are good for SEO, but only if the webmaster has a clue and gives attribution to the agency. You can often see the content of press releases followed by more original content, that's easy to check for Google.

So I guess the corollary of this thread is: use google to find your content and ask politely for attribution, it would be good both for you and the webmaster copying you.

          That's just stupid.

So you're saying Copyleaks is using Google SERPs to verify duplicate pages.

Go to the source (Google) & skip the middle man (Copyleaks).

And as paulgl said, you are not suing anybody for copying you. Once somebody has copied your content, there is nothing you can do SEO-wise.

What is interesting to discuss is how to avoid Google to mark your original content as a copy. The best way is to have an autoupdated sitemaps linked to Google webmaster tools. If you are really worried about this, you can fetch those pages in Google Webmaster tools right after you upload it.

And the reason is logical, which escapes quite a few people.

Of course lots of 'em speak out of both sides of their mouths....
first that it's bad, then that okay, maybe if you cite resources....

Such rot. Press releases are okay to dupe...blah blah blah...

      Such a waste of time.

Still, nobody here knows the definition of plagiarism.

If they did, they would know it is a waste of time.

You must hire a lawyer and take them to court. Then, you
might or might not get content removed....there are
