How hard to rank?

Hey everyone, I'm really new to IM, and I have a question on using MNF and ranking. I know everyone has different opinions about this, but can you all give me a general idea on how hard it is to compete with x amount of pages?

For example, I found a keyword using MNF that has 12k monthly searches and 33k pages. Then I have other words that have 4k searches and 8k competing pages. Is it worth going for keywords that have 30-40k exact search results? What are your experiences with the difficulty of ranking for keywords for x number of exact search result pages. Thanks a lot.

People give out general rules of don't go over 5,000 competition in "" or whatever but really you can't go by that at all!

Ive dominated search results with millions of search results before and that was all simply from analyzing the competition properly.

No simple way to explain it and it takes a bit of time to see what you need to look for.

No Authority Sites
Low number of backlinks
Low quality backlins
Low PR of the site
Page/Site not optimized for keyphrase

Thats just a few of them to look out for!

  Thanks for the response, that makes sense. Is there any tool that can gather that type of information quickly? Like an add-on to firefox? Also, how would you define an authority site? Thanks.
