A site with 2 identical home pages? A new ranking trick?

I just noticed a competitor's site was updated and now has 2 identical home pages. I doubt that it's a mistake. Possibly a new SEO trick to rank higher?

    If it's one site, there's only one.

    It would not be a homepage if there was another....

    Perhaps you mean he ranks 2 landing type pages. Nothing wrong
    with that. Perhaps you mean he loads one of two pages randomly
    as the homepage. Nothing wrong with some type of a page serving.
    Lots of sites do that. Perhaps you mean he has 2 identical pages.
    If this was done as doorway pages, just having 2 would not be bad
    on its own.

    Perhaps you mean something else.

    Lots of big sites have different ways of getting to the homepage.

    You need to explain a little more.

      The site simply has 2 home tabs in the menu bar. The site owner is an experienced webmaster, so I can't believe it's just a mistake.

        I'd go with the simpler explanation: it's an user error. Especially since there should be no point for the thing that you describe.

    I do not think it is a mistake but I do not think this is about SEO. I am guessing that they may be conducting split testing for the site.

      I'm certainly no expert on split testing a site, but from what I do understand about it, that is not how it's accomplished.
