SEO... From where to begin with?

I have a WordPress blog (hosted on custom domain) regarding the teaching of different tutorials. I have made somewhat like 40 posts and I do call them 'quality posts' as they are unique and of over 400 words.

All I am getting are 10-20 visitors daily from Google. I haven't installed any SEO plugin or something and never performed anything related to SEO, however, I do know about the meta descriptions & tags and have set them all correctly.

My question is, I got time, I will continue to write 1-2 articles daily. Even after that, I can spare my 1-2 hours daily in SEO (maybe more in starting)... But I don't know from where to start! Any software? Any tool? Any list of websites where I should perform a specific task? In this regard, I need your help!

Should I install any SEO plugin at WordPress? I saw many there but since I don't know how to use them accurately, I wouldn't like to damage my SEO with them.

Google Adsense is placed in my website, just to let you guys know. And yeah, I don't want to spend much of money in SEO, instead, I want to learn it.

Regards,

Raja

  • To learn SEO, you have to spend money. An SEO plugin isn't imperative but won't destroy your site's SEO if used.

    • Why do you have to spend money to learn SEO?

Been learning and doing SEO for well over a decade and my biggest expense is time learning, not money.

I've never bought any SEO ebooks or courses, simply keeping up with what's going on in SEO circles and my own SEO tests and it's pretty easy to learn and keep current SEO wise. Biggest expense in SEO testing is domains/hosting, but considering a lot of tests can be performed safely on important domains the only cost is when you know an SEO test will burn the domain: for example I know testing autoblogging/duplicate content will result in a Google penalty long term, but it's really easy to make enough money on even a Google penalized domain to pay for it's registration/hosting.

    • That confuses me. I recently started a profile on elance and took, besides others, the SEO test. I'm in the top 20% and I never spent a single cent in learning SEO. Would you mind explaining me why my knowledge is worthless? You know, I don't want to rip off my clients.
  • The Moz Guide helped me a lot.
  • Yes, Moz is a good way to start.. But I would also advice you to use Yoast! They are the best when talking about Wordpress plugins about SEO!
  • Thanks all for the suggestions! That helps me a lot!

    Any other suggestion?

    • Yes, don't be like me and read, read, read and take too little action . Apart from that, have some analytics tool installed. Google Analytics is the 800 pound gorilla, but I like Piwik more, especially for legal issues here in Germany. You don't need to understand it upfront, but at some point you want to evaluate what you were doing. Then it is nice to have data available.
  • Is your site hosted at WordPress.com? There's a huge difference to WordPress.org, and if that's the case advice about plugins doesn't apply.

    • Thanks all for the replies! That's really appreciated! It's only been few hours here since I joined but it feels like I've gained a lot of SEO knowledge.

However I do have some questions jumping in my mind.

      1. Should I use any free backlinks submitter?
      2. Can I use the popular tags & keywords for my articles even if some of them are not entirely relevant with my articles? I mean, could it damage my SEO?
      3. Any URL to high PR bookmarking websites list as advised by @selenathomas?

Nope, it's not hosted at WordPress.

There are lots of places where you can learn SEO ..Of course I mean free SEO but you can seriously try with MOZ and Youtube!
  • If you have quality content on your website then don't worry.

The first thing you would to check your targeted keywords competition that you would used on your post.

Your targeted keywords searches would be High and competition would be law. And remember target always ' Long tail keywords' also don't stuff your keyword into one blog and also not repeat stuffing on your blog post.

After you done above all things, Start make 10 different titles and description for your Blog and Submit into High PR Bookmarking sites.

Next step is try to find your competitors sharers via sharetally.org that would be helpful to find most shares of your competitors and tag them into your post on social sites. So they will share your post also if valuable so you will get more engagement.

You can also use Guest Blog if you are good writer. Contribute on Guest Blog site and Post their your content that also good tricks.

So all above it's good tricks that i have shared with you try it and make sure you will definitely see the change in your G.A report.
  • I would suggest to use SEO plugin for your Word-press blog. You can learn SEO course through online and also start implementing the strategies that you come across. Share your blog in social Media and ask for reviews to drive more traffic.
  • I guess the good news is that your site attracts traffic all on its own without SEOing anything. If you keep that up, any later effort to apply SEO tactics will only help you.

But since you say you have time, spend some of it networking with your target audience. You'll find them on social networks, forums, etc. Make sure your profile and/or signature points to your blog and then chat away.

    • Analyse your website with SEO tools. Numbers of free tools are available online. Fix all the Onpage issues. Focus on the right keywords. Keep on promoting your blogs by all means. Know your target audience and engage with them.
  • Start with Plugins
Use SEO by yoast or All in one Plugin for SEO
Secondly use the same keyword on its Tittle, URL, body, and on its meta description.

And at last get backlinks for that article, for which you have to comment on Intensedebate, commentluv and high page rank webaites..and paste that post URL instead of your Blog URL.
Now wait for couple of days to go...because it take time to rank your articles
  • If you are looking to find a wordpress plugin for SEO then I suggest you to go with Yoast SEO plugin which is probably the best SEO plugin available at the moment. And whenever you update your blog, you should share this on some social sites as well which will really help, plus participating in forums and posting comments on related blog would also be really helpful. You can also do link exchange with other related blog, but never do two way link exchanges, only do three way or four way links exchanges.
