If you analyze every big website out there, you'll learn that most of the traffic came from "Direct" (more than 60%) and the rest comes from "Referral" and "SEO". (Just check any big website using alexa)

Direct traffic

- People directly going back to your website by typing your web address on the browser
- People who clicked on the link from email address , software

Referral
- Mostly came from social media
- Other Links

SEO

- Search Engine Traffic

I've realized that most big brands out there don't rely on SEO or Social Media, they create quality contents so people will love to read and get back on their website multiple times.

want to siphon off traffic

start looking in the serps for linking opportunities then try to get one from a ranking page

ranking webpages get traffic and if your link is compelling enough good chance of getting traffic from that link

what ever you do don't spam the ranking webpage otherwise most likely that link will not be accepted and forget about that traffic

a good way to drive traffic is CPM and CPC campaigns (adwords for example) , they are not free like the methods mentioned above but they can help driving traffic towards you site or blog.

The thing with CPM and CPC is that you need to create or pay for attractive "banners" that will catch the visitors attention, and also you need to monitor your campaigns to see what works and what's not so you can make the best out of the money you invest.

I had the chance to work on great campaigns and the successful recipe is always "attractive banners" + "great content", as if you miss one of those you will be losing money for nothing.

Too many people by pass low volume keywords (Short or long) as their search volume numbers are not enticing. What would you rather have, 20-40 buyer keywords that bought people to your sight wanting to buy or 1,000 views with 99% bounce rate?

You get banned because you are spamming, If you were actually answering peoples questions regarding hair replacement, joining in discussions and creating informative threads, i am sure many people would have developed an interest in your brand to click to your website.

Inquiries in the related niche will work
In joining related communities I think the best way for this is to build relationship.
Long tail keywords that is usually used by your targeted users.
Tweeter tweets will work only for targeted audience.

Last tweet out your business. I use twitter and i get good amount of traffic from twitter. But its not long lasting traffic. Its like most of the people clicked on the link by mistake.

Lately, Google+ has become my best friend. By using Google+ and pinging your content whether it be a Youtube video, a blog post or a comment on the blog post, for long-tailed keywords especially, you will be pleasantly surprised how quickly you can rank your content. : ) - Kristie
