SEO as a Long Term Business?

I'm curious, how many people in this sub-forum do SEO as their main business? Do you find that it's something with long term viability or are most people only interested in short term results?

Also, do you typically do SEO with something else (other kinds of marketing) or something like social media management?

I'm not doing it full time yet but I hope to start freelancing soon if I can get hold of some clients.

I started in SEO, but rapidly repositioned myself into a more robust offering.
My path is not typical and I do not think it speaks to the viability or lack thereof of SEO.

I know people who specialize in SEO and have built businesses around it.
For me..it seems more logical to have SEO as a small part of a larger structure. Since marketing is the breadwinner in almost all businesses why not focus on attaining that.

My logic at any rate.
