How far can optimizing your onpage SEO take a website (B2B) for generating traffic trough organic search?

I am asking this question because I keep see coming back the importance of outside links pointing to your site (relevant & authority sites). When a company is 'new', it seems difficult to build those links on relevant and authority sites.

I'd think keyword research will help uncover a part of the answer. Average search volume, ppc competition, competition research and the level of their seo will all be valuable to understand.

There are lots of variables. However, is it "impossible" to get high in Google in your niche if you don't have the links to your site yet (other then internal links)?

I hope you don't struggle to much with the word 'impossible'

Links are still the number one ranking factor. How you build/acquire them can vary, but they are still what matters most.

      Internal links do count then?

Also, the site needs to have authoritity and relevance. So you need to have some "real sites" willing to talk about you, right?

So, optimizing your pages with internal links and content + getting your name out there?

Internal links are important and really powerful when done right. However, you still need external links to make the whole thing work right.

Dang... I forgot to include or preface my comment with "I don't claim to know exactly what google will do to rank your site".
