Forum is just there to discuss on something, If the forum members found your post is so informatice then your profile will have some value, people will eager to know about you, that time you can share your link with them.

Forum is good for driving traffic. It is not as much effective for ranking.

Forum are best way to drive target traffic, they do have seo value but the main advantage is direct traffic from forum and the traffic are much hot leads than the cold leads generated by ads

Well if you're into site rankings, I guess forums won't actually work. I believe it (forums) it effectively works if you want to drive more traffic on your website.

The forum is being just for discussion.

I assume by manpower you mean paid forum posters? As long as they are good at what they do and use the keywords you want them to use in their posts, then your forums should be visible in search results in no time.

I notice that there is a possibility that you can do SEO in forums. When I try to search for a certain product, I see that some websites that are in page one of Google are forums. Forum discussion is for sharing knowledge or get knowledge on any topic of your interest.
It should not be used in wrong way or to spam a links in discussions. This can ban you from the forum admin. By following the rules and regulation of the forum community you can discuss the topics with other members.

So next question is should I create it under the domain like forum.companyname.com or companyname.com/forum ? any difference? any pros and cons?

As I just met with a website developer they are telling me, that I need different engines for my site and forums as I required other stuff so they are gonna build it like forum.companyname.com

And next question is how do I direct traffic to my corporate page from this forum too. Just curious. A healthy way of directing.
