Help me with a side project

At the moment, I am learning digital marketing with an emphesis on SEO (I simply find that the most interesting of all)

At my job, I work part-time at digital marketing but I want to boost up my learning curve. I am busy with some great tutorials about SEO but I want to start a side project.

Would starting a blog be a good idea? Wordpress is free right? I can add Google Analytics and try to generate traffic.

Would this work to help my learning curve or are there better options?

You need to run sites and try stuff to get hands-on experience. I guess you're already doing that, but your own blog gets you more room to experiment. I'd love to have one too, but I've got no time or energy to run any more sites.

WordPress.org is free, and pretty easy to manage.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

    What's your excuse?

I have one site to manage, from the company I work for. So, maybe adding a blog will help. Just asking here for some feedback / advise since there must be people here who also started out at zero at some point.

Thet, I've missed seeing you on the offline part of the forum.

Is the blog going to be a personal project, for you or for the company you work for? It doesn't get much easier than wordpress, but you should consider hosting it yourself.

Hi, i've not been there lately. True. I have been lurking a bit and sometimes I wanted to answer a Q about cold calling but everything I wanted to say was already been said.
Also, I am making more and more steps towards online marketing. Which is a good development for me since it fits my INTP personality better ;-)

The side project would be a completely personal project. In the evening, so I can learn to work with Google Analytics more and more.

Digital marketing is broad so I want to lay my focus somewhere. Ofcourse everything is interrelated, but for me, SEO/SEA.. conversion is most interesting.

It's really good that you are not just sticking to one income source, as our life is already practical. A side project would be good, and starting a blog would be good. But here are the questions that I wanna ask you before creating a side project:

    - What is your blog's niche?
    - If you already have a blog niche in mind, are you doing it because you wanna make money? Or for passion?
    - Did you already learned about the effective SEO methods and strategies up to date?

I suggest that before you create the side project, try taking your time in doing your homework first to have a game plan for your blog. Don't just put the game plan into your mind, write it down. Since SEO is the most powerful method for your blog to gain organic and passive traffic, try to evaluate if you already know everything about it. However, if you are not yet confident on what you are doing to possibly rank your blog, you definitely need to learn more about SEO.

Although there are many free SEO training out there by searching on Google and Youtube, but if you want your website to become effective, you should definitely invest in a SEO training course that is proven to work for most newbies, average Joes and advanced SEO specialists (even gurus). However, it's only a suggestion, and it is your choice whether you wanna pursue it or not.

If we already spend more than a decade or two and thousands of dollars on education without any doubts, how much more if we do the same that can really turn things around on you.

You can also try other methods like social media engagement, Adwords, Facebook ads and so on. It's your choice. I'm just giving you ideas to help you out in your side project, and just take action on what you need for it. I hope this helps you a lot and I wish you the best of luck on your side project. Cheers!

Jeff, your advice: Love it !

I am all about investing in education. I have enrolled in an Online marketing course and I am almost finished. This one was more broad (so from e-mail marketing, to SEO, to content strategy... everything)

I decided to focus on SEO/SEA (and ofcourse analytics) so a blog would be a nice focus since I don't plan to sell anything at the moment. The goal is to be able to learn on my own after office hours. I already enrolled in some more courses and try to learn a lot trough they internet.

Goal is def. not to make money, my goal is to learn online marketing trough a channel.
