Hi all,
i have recently purchased a blog. The owner didn't do any SEO, etc... the blog (wordpress) doesn't even have yoast plugin or similar.
It get some traffic from G however.
The question is:
if i install a seo plugin and start doing basic seo, will the site improve at Google's eyes, or nothing will change?
any experience in this particular case?
Thanks

The answer to your question is it DEPENDS. Google is a complicated beast with a lot of moving parts.

And you need to understand that the Yoast plugin serves many functions.

So before you do ANYTHING it's IMPORTANT to do your homework and know what your working with. If you over optimize you can end up with a Panda or other god forsaken penalty.

The truth is I rank websites all the time without any of these seo plugins. But look I am not saying don't use them, but understand they are not key to ranking.

This is by no means anywhere near an exhaustive list of questions. But a couple of good ones to ask youself.

    1. Are you already ranking for the keywords you want to rank for?
    2. If not do you know which keywords you want to rank for?
    3. Have you done research to see if there is even any traffic associated with these additional keywords?
    4. Have you identified any "hero" pages that have outstanding content that you would like to get more engagement for.
    5. Do you an ongoing content strategy?
    6. Have you sat down and identified truly what it is your trying to accomplish. If it's just "traffic" all you can eat understand there are many ways to achieve this beyond just organic search.

Anyway this is just some food for thought. If you can answer those initial questions it is easier to give you advise on what "basic seo" should be done.

    Hope that helps..

      Hello, let me reply below:

      1. Are you already ranking for the keywords you want to rank for?
not the ones i'm interested in

      2. If not do you know which keywords you want to rank for?
      yes i know them

      3. Have you done research to see if there is even any traffic associated with these additional keywords?
      yes there is

      4. Have you identified any "hero" pages that have outstanding content that you would like to get more engagement for.
      no hero page

      5. Do you an ongoing content strategy?
      yes

      6. Have you sat down and identified truly what it is your trying to accomplish. If it's just "traffic" all you can eat understand there are many ways to achieve this beyond just organic search.

i don't need general traffic, but organic search for such keywords. Keywords that drive "buying mode" traffic.

The site ranks for a few ones in the same niche (the previous owner, never worked on them, so just casual ranking). So likely other keywords could also be ranked.

      Thanks
