Noindex to categories in Wordpress SEO?

Hello Everyone!

I have got a question, where a lot of people have their own vision and reason.

Question: Is it good for SEO give your categories an NOINDEX?

I want to target my question to only normal websites and blogs, but Don't Webshops.
Because it's very normal to have an Index for the category pages for webshops.

And is it better to rank with your category page for an keyword?
Or do you guys prefer to rank with a post for a keyword?

Hope you could give me some advice !

The folks that suggest noindexing a category page have no idea what they're doing.

Ask yourself, does it make sense to noindex the mother of all pages in a category? The answer is No, it doesn't make a bit of sense.

  • Use them to your advantage and get keywords in them.

It's just another (frequently updated) page on your site.

    Definitely don't noindex them, though.
  • I have no one-size-fits-all answer to that.

If it's a sort of generic site with a blog, then noindexing categories might be a good idea. The blog piece is the main course, and at least it's a bit harder for the site owner to shoot himself in the foot with duplicate content.

I've build several sites where category pages are content pages on their own right while still listing the sub articles. This stuff can be very handy if used properly.
  • I would suggest you, not go for noindex, because you wont get any advantage of no indexing, in fact if you add index and follow your website will get advantage of internal link juice.
Search engines will be more clear on your website structuring.

    • Thank you for the help and posting this question here. Even I am bit confused over this, as I am only a developer and don't now much about SEO.
