Ranking a .io domain locally?

Warriors!

I was wondering. Has ANYONE ranked a .io extension locally before? I've researched plenty of references on Google and found plenty of different answers so I wanted to reach out to the forum community and give it a shot.

Since .io IS considered a country I was wondering if it were a good investment to start one of my projects around the domain extension rather than a traditional .com/net/org which are completely non existent for me.

Let me know your thoughts, thanks!

When I said local I meant other than its main purpose and thats for the Indian Ocean territory.

So essentially, would I be able to rank a .io domain in the United States for a specific keyword and rank it in the local searches?

Ex: "best new york bakeries" in Google. Is it possible to rank a .io? Thanks for you feedback, I appreciate it.

.io is not for people living in the Indian Ocean. Originally, yes. But things changed
There are very few people left, and I hardly think they would even give a
        rat's behind about .io.

Like I said, .io for local would be like .mars for people on mars.
        It aint.

Repeat, .io is one of the fastest growing extensions.

If one had a far, I'd like to see them get e-i-e.io

I would imagine that people are using .io as others, trying to
get in on some word or phrase ending in io.

Even though I say not to give a rip about most extensions,
I for one stay away from designer ones. I don't have time
to play games and get cute. Others feel the need.

Why not, if it's a local domain for local ranking you won't have a problem with it.

Technically a country extension, but not for Google.

What Paul said. Some of these extensions were sold or rented to a company, and opened for everyone. Google is just recognizing this fact.
