Hi,
I've just realized, that I did a very stupid mistake. While building up my blog a few years ago, I have linked to Wikipedia and pasted some content on my page. Before you start calling me names, let me explain, that my intention was only to show on this example to my readers, what kind of nonsense is been published on the net, even on a site like Wikipedia. My idea was certainly not to make use of this duplicate content. I've realized only today, after searching manually in the serps, that my page is nowhere, even pages with no keywords of my page are showing up, that there must be something wrong and only now, after years, I've realized that this must be called duplicate content by Google. Ups! I've corrected my mistake, took the bloody link out and changed the content accordingly. Now, please advice, shall I sit quietly and wait, till Google will forgive me or shall I rip off the site, may be with a 301? And how long approximate it will take before I shall receive mercy?
Thanks
Leatherman

You only did half the work. You still need links to rank the page, either strong/followed internal or external links.

Ok, but what about my punishment? How long will it take and after my correction you feel keeping the site intact should be safe?
      Thanks

        I doubt you're being punished.

Odds are your page is buried in Supplemental SERPs only because your page is weak as far as SEO compared to the Wikipedia page you copied.

Supplemental SERPs is an overflow for same content pages.

When two or more same content pages on are found by Google, they rank the stronger web page/domain & usually send the rest of the same content pages found to Supplemental SERPs.

Supplemental SERPs isn't a penalty/slap because Google has no idea who created the content first. A weak domain/page could in fact create the content first but Google finds a scraper site (strong backlinks constantly reindexed) before finding a weak original site/page that has no SEO (weak backlinks).

I have just added a shoe wiki to my site and like to invite other bloggers in my field to participate, like a link on my wiki for a link on their page. After this experience I had with Wikipedia, do you think this is a good idea or you see any problems? This company scares me.

Those are reciprocal links where you're exchanging links. Those types of links are fine If (BIG If) it's only a few links on a more diverse link profile.

Having tons of reciprocal links & not much of any other type of backlink is a bad idea.

No reason to be scared of Google, just use your head & remember, If the backlink is very easy to get everyone else will be getting the same backlink which means it's eventually going to labeled as a spammy backlink.

Holy words. Besides, with the inmense amount of ways to get good backlinks nowadays I don't see why you bother so much about reciprocals as if it was the holy grail. Do a search on how link juice is distributed and you will see what I mean.

Just for your information: after I have changed the content a n d deleted the link to Wikipedia my site is doing fine, receptive 1st page and 3rd page. So the problem was clearly with the link, which put my site into the drain.
                Thanks for all your help.

Exactly like this it was for my page. After taking out the follow link all became fine. It's simply to the fact that Google goes with the stronger page. No punishment, just system.

Google is not too harsh about duplicate content so said matt from Google.... They understand some duplicate content will happen and is sometimes a good thing... As long as not too much of the page is duplicated, with some heavy revisions its should be forgiven quickly enough. They did say it would take more then a simple few changes to get a duplicate content page back in rankings.

Again, there's nothing for Google to forgive.

Supplemental SERPs is controlled by the webmaster, copy content + weak SEO & you'll get buried in the SERPs (Supplemental SERPs).

When you're ready to rank a page, stop copying content or at least have better/stronger SEO than other domains/pages.

    It's very simple.

BTW, there's legit reasons for some types of copied content, example, Public Domain content.

No, it's not, it never was, it never will. It's copying copyrighted material without permission that gets you in trouble, but not the way you think.

        Obviously you're clueless.

Try searching Supplemental SERPs, every page you'll find is still indexed, no bans.

99.99% of everything Google shows on the SERPs is scraped content. Google doesn't create much original content compared to what's shown on the SERPs.

Sure, we'll call it punishable & unethical.

ctually, Google does not penalize for duplicate content, at least not in the sense of 'inocent' dup. content. Duplicate content is a natural occurance within the www. Search engines attempt to supply users with information they query and they have an elaborate filtering system in place to pass by the dup. content. Sites that have greater popularity are preferred over sites - with the same content - that have less popularity. The penalties are for those sites that try to manipulate search engines.
