A little taken back by google

I thought i found a great set of keyphrases to build a site for but the traffic isn't coming in..

My keyphrase:

426,000 competing pages
40.5k searches for june
30k search globally over 12 months
(according to google)

I checked out the daily searches according to seobook and that came up with 5 searches a day for google. The result was so low that i didn't even believe it. I have another site that i rank number 1 for my main keyword and seobook is way off on that so I kinda threw out it's credibility.

I've checked my stats for the last couple of days and i'm getting a meesly 2-3 unques a day while ranking number 6-7 for my main keyphrase which gets 40.5k for june. Even if google is off by an entire 50% i still should have more traffic coming in at 6th position and 20k searches a month. I'm a little discouraged by what i'm finding..

Use Google Adwords Tool if you're cheap, or get Keyword Discovery or Keyword Country if you have some cash. Google's stats are inflated, but at least they show more long tail keywords.

Secondly, don't target a keyword expecting a certain amount of visitors depending on your ranking. There are many other factors, such as how well the higher ranked sites convert. Your site title & description play a big role.
Thank you for your post. Even with a bad title i think there still should be more traiffic coming in. Does anyone else care to give their opinion?

I agree with Keyword-research.info. Those are all factors. Another factor is how did you do your search on Google. Did you do an exact search or a broad search? this can make all of the difference.

Is it new because you can see result by 6 months or so.

I had this exact same problem! I visited SEObook and got a nice "4" visits a day for one of my main keywords where google said something like "6,600" a month. This was using Exact match too!

I never knew that the option existed, let alone that it needs to be set to exact. Thanks for that.

Well, what i have to work with now are:

10k for june and 12k for an annual average. These stats are actually much more realistic hah.

Is it really possible for the top positions and a few adwords advertisments to be eating up nearly 99% of the traffic?

        Josiah,
Natural first page listing on google takes 98% of searches with the top 3 positions taking nearly 70%! Adwords is different as it'll depend on where you show up (position), when you show up and how often (time/day). However you definitely need to be on the first page with adwords otherwise you'll get very few click throughs.

  • All this keyword research stuff is just silly. All the tools are off by a wide margin. Just create good content. Keep creating it. Do a little bit of internal SEO using a tool like the one in the left margin of this site (Hey, I need the money, and it is an awesome tool as proven by the results you'll get even with the free trial.) and a little bit of external SEO with articles and blog comments. After a few days or weeks, you'll know how often your term gets searched.

A lot of it is luck -- you never know how often a term gets searched until you get on top for it, although (any Hollywood actress)+"boobs" is sure to get you a few hits.

I think you tell the point. Only the site on the first page get profit form search engin. It is really hard to be listed on the first page. Your backlinks must more than 1,000.

Quick tip, if you think you found "gold" and are serious about spending resources on building a site. First create an adwords campaign for the primary keyword in question. Create a crappy but relevant ad. Bid high enough to make sure your ad gets displayed on the first page. Let it run for at least 24 hours. Odds are you won't get a click, but you will see the total impression count for 24 hour period. This will give you a much better idea on the actual traffic numbers a keyword really gets.
