Keyword research with SEO for firefox

I spent a lot of time compiling a list of 35 long-tail keywords, all with over 1000 searches a month and most with under 10,000 google competition.

Now, browsing the forum today I read some advice about using SEO for firefox to check for incoming links to the first page results. I see Y!Links, Y!.edu Links, Y!.gov Links Y! Page Links, and Y!.edu Page Links.

Which of these am I supposed to be looking at? Most of the keywords I spent hours coming up with are showing thousands of Y!Links for the front page results..........does this mean I have no chance with any of these keywords and wasted all that time?

You must look on the PR.

To check the links look at (Y:L) that is the links for that page. If you look at (Y:LD) those are the total links from the whole domain.

If you are looking at an article on ezines, for example, you are going to see millions of links if you are looking at (Y:LD) you are obviously not going to be competing against all of the links.

    Hope that clears it up.

Did you use exact search when looking at your competition (placing your chosen keyword/keyword phrase between quotes, i.e., "keyword")?

Find out more about your competitors' strength by doing a search using your chosen keyword/KWP using the following search parameters:
inurl:"keyword/keyword phrase" (tells you how many websites you're up against with your chosen keyword/KWP in their domain name URL).

intitle:"keyword/keyword phrase" (tells you how many pages you're going to compete with your chosen keyword/KWP with your chosen keyword/KWP in their meta title).
Naturally, the lesser the number you'll see, the higher your chance of beating your competitors.

    Hope this helps.

I agree, using backlinks from search engines like Yahoo will give you a birds eye view if you can gain a competitive vantage point just by looking at the overall structure of the search engine summary and use of keywording. You will probably notice a pattern with most top hitters, equating the keyword allotment in the first couple of sentences, if see that you can emulate or surpass this by generating better hits with more innovative word capture schematics then you've got yourself a winner.
