If your news items end up on social media sites, and people come to read only one piece, high bounce rate is sort of unavoidable.

If you understand the nature of your traffic, the question on how to reduce your bounce rate is probably fairly easy for you to answer. But it might not even be the right question to ask. Why would you want to reduce it? Does it really help your business in some way?

      You maintain some instructions.

      1/ You use responsive template.
      2/ Don't use any pop-up window.
3/ When you suggest anywhere for your site link, then use your site related keywords. (I mean its main fact to your bounce rate)
      Thanks.

    Hi,

The loading time of your webpage is not only an important factor in SEO, but also in having a visitor to stay on your site. Deactivate unnecessary plugins and optimize your images and code to speed up the loading time of your site. Your visitors will be more likely to view additional pages if your load times are faster.

What makes you say something like that? How about at least a hint of an argument to back that scaremongering?

Bounce rate might be an indication of some kind of issue, or not. I can't say without seeing the statistics, and neither can you. It's pretty nasty for you to post FUD for the original post to match the narrative you wanted.

Why? Spammers may be some of your most loyal visitors who run up the "visited pages" stats. Depending on the goal a bot might crawl the whole site, not just a single page.

I agree that it's a good idea to filter these out from the stats if you can.

This is about the most accurate and true reply. You need to have something interesting for them to click on, therefore eliminating the bounce. Relevant articles with images are about the best way....or of course hot chicks.

My bounce rate is very high too but I know it's because most visitors arrive from an organic search which leads them to a specific page on my site that addresses their question or search request. They read the page and leave. Although I would prefer if they stick around (and many do), I realize they want a quick concise answer, which is what I give them. Only a small fraction of my visitors come through the home page.

My site is over 15 years old and has been redesigned and rewritten several times, and is now "responsive" to mobile users who are making up a greater percentage of my visitors as time goes on. Mobile users don't have the time or patience for reading long content articles, regardless of the "mobile friendliness" of the site. I think this contributes to my bounce rate. So, I'm planning a mobile version of my site that delivers content in more concise, quick to read format that may reduce my bounce rate and make it more suitable to the short attention span of mobile users, although I'm concerned about SEO. Will Google see the reduced content as a problem?

Nope. Where do you dig these statements that have no bearing on reality? Are you just watching one site?

Good sites often have bounce rates of 60%+, and if you understand where the traffic comes from it's possible that that kind of number is A-OK.

If you're talking about Google Analytics bounce rate, you need to check the implementation first. It's a horrible noisy signal anyway but the way GA measures it by default is often way off reality. Theres a ton of stuff you can read up on how to set up GA to better measure bounce rate, and there's lots of ways you can manipulate bounce rate (e.g event tracking).

Of course, you have to make sure the headers get people emotionally worked up enough to click the next page link

I preached series pages (silos) years ago on this forum & people acted like I was crazy.

I learned that technique (series pages) from howstuffworks.com, years ago (wayback) they ranked for the keyword hurricane. Today they rank #49 after they did a site/theme overhaul & butchered their on-page SEO.

Or it could be that the user left satisfied, because the first page answered her question. This is not something you can declare without context.

I am not sure many people understand that you can set the parameters for bounce rate yourself.. this is part of a post I made to some of my subscribers recently

        What is Bounce Rate??

According to google Bounce rate is:

Bounce Rate is the percentage of single-page sessions (i.e. sessions in which the person left your site from the entrance page without interacting with the page).

IF THEY READ YOUR CONTENT AND THEN CLICKED BACK – NO GOOD

IF THEY READ YOUR CONTENT AND WENT TO ANOTHER SITE FROM THAT PAGE (NEW URL OR EXTERNAL LINK) – NO GOOD

IF THEY READ YOUR CONTENT AND THEN CLOSED THE TAB – NO GOOD

IF THEY READ YOUR CONTENT AND FELL ASLEEP OR GOT ON A CALL – NO GOOD

IF THEY DO NOT CLICK ANOTHER PAGE FOR 30 MINUTES

The Good News is that we can play google at it’s own game and redefine what a bounce is.

So John follows a link to your site decides after 5 seconds that it’s not for him.. that’s a bounce right?

So Sarah then comes to your blog and reads the front page lets say she stays for 30 seconds she obviously has some level of engagement she may even save the link for later..

        That’s still a bounce right?

Wrong.. if you do the following

Take your google analytics code and add the following:

        Standard Code:

        setTimeout(“_gaq.push([‘_trackEvent’, ’15_seconds’, ‘read’])”,15000);

If you use the Universal Code

        setTimeout(“ga(‘send’, ‘event’, ‘unbounce’, ’15_sec’)”, 15000);

what this does is only count bounces for people who are on your site for less than the time specified Personally i think 30 seconds is more than enough so change the numbers in red to 30 and 30000

Here is the Google Help guide to Adjusted Bounce rate http://analytics.blogspot.com.es/201...in-google.html

I'm going to answer this from a content marketing perspective.

Basically, the easy answer to this question is to craft amazingly-written content that will hold your users' attention for a long time. I'd like to share this article tackling stats about content marketing.

However, that isn't enough to render them to check other pages. With that said, I recommend doing this:

It's a screenshot from a national news site in the Philippines, called Rappler. This is quite clever really, as it leads to the following:
    • Gives you internal links
    • Reduces the bounce rate by allowing users to view other pages
    • increases user engagement

Please let me know what you guys think.

How did you come to that conclusion? What if the bounce rate actually comes from popular articles being shared in social media? You know, people read the story, and get back to the previous site to comment it to their circle of friends. Or something.

Or in other words, if you don't know how something works, why post just some random BS?

Make sure that you search title and description match the content of the post (meaning that people get what they expect after coming through a search)

Make sure that the very first paragraph is grabbing attention to encourage visitors to read more (remember that people only spend a few seconds to decide if they want to continue reading)

Structure you post in a way to make reading easy (headers, paragraphs, images)

Be brief, be clear, stick to the point. Have a point!

Bounce rate can be reduced by engaging your viewers with more interactive content like posting a video or a quiz/poll etc. Create the landing pages that your visitors would want to see and put content in there that would be read in quick time. Also, make your visitors stay on your website by creating a need like suggestions for interesting articles.

A high bounce rate is a symptom of one of two things:

      1) Your content is not delivering on what the reader expected.

If this is the case, you need to do a better job of providing your readers with the content they're looking for.

Are you using bait and switch titling techniques where you use a sensational headline to get the reader into the content and then don't deliver? Stop.

Are you prioritizing content quantity to the detriment of content quality? Stop. This is especially important with a news site. People expect a certain level of professionalism.

      2) Your website has a technical or functional issue that causing people to leave.

What's your pages loading time like? If you're slow to load, people will bail.

What's your navigation like? If your navigation isn't intuitive, people will not explore the rest of your site.

In the case of a news site, are you easily offering up related articles? Make sure to offer your readers an array of complementary articles they can click to once they've finished reading the one that brought them to the site.

Realistically, the only way to pinpoint the exact reasons for bounce rate is testing. You can look at timing to give you an initial idea of what the cause might be though.

For instance, are your users bouncing within seconds of arriving? That's probably a slow load issue.

Are they mostly sticking around for a while and then leaving? That's probably an issue with content quality or a poor selection of complementary content being made available to them.

In the end, if you want to reduce your bounce rate, pinpoint what you feel like the most likely culprit is, and then change that and only that. If you think it's a load time issue, reduce your load time, change nothing else, and then assess your results. If it didn't help, then move on to the next item and test that.

A high bounce rate is something that can occur because of ad campaigns or social media posting. You advertised the page of for a single thing, and people who clicked got what they expected. Great! Even if they left satisfied that can still lead to a bounce. This can be even more pronounced if the audience you're advertising to already knows you, because they know your site and may have no need to browse around.

Of maybe the content you rank for just happens to answer the question that the search engine user had in mind. No need to browse any further.

In both cases you can decrease the bounce rate, and perhaps it's even a very good idea depending on the goals of the site. Having the call to actions or related articles high and prominent enough might help.

Probably most people not getting it in this thread, isn't it no 1 solution fix it all, agree?

Let me explain, along with 2 popular examples below.

    Viral Sites
Connecting Site... - 25% bounce rate, 4 minutes time on site
Connecting Site... - 76% bounce rate, 1:47 minutes time on site

Comparing both sites who get over 50% of their traffic from social site mainly from facebook, we could see the whole content strategy is different.

Viral Nova focusing on posting other peoples videos, rewords the headline and content to attract visitors.

BoredPanda focusing mostly on images, though.

Isn't it a better strategy by NOT taking any exact solution, but go ahead and research what you Direct Competitors are doing?

Important Questions To Ask While Researching Your Niche Competitors

1.) How is their websites structure look and feel in the visitors eyes? Is it user friendly? Does visitors want something looks authoritive or the other way?

2.) What is their whole content marketing strategy? Did they have a consistent content strategy? How do their interact with their visitors? Do they just write what they want or focusing on what their visitors want?

3.) Where did they get most of their traffic from? And, how do they get their traffic?

Hope this help in brainstorm what is best for your own niche.

Your contents should be short & well written. Make sure that your website should display contents instead of ads when visitor visits on your website. Open external links in new window, offer related content on your post, make your website mobile friendly to reduce bounce rate.

      Or perfect marketing.

If I want them to land on my page, become convinced they should call me, and they call me, without going to any other page, I'll have 100% bounce rate, but the page would be working to perfection and I'd be laughing all the way to the bank.

you can try it to lower bounce rate-
      1.Develop a better web design.
2.Make sure your content is easy to read.
3.Use best, attractive, related, unique and quality content on your news pages.
Actually, of 3 things. The third one is the one I described above. It works the same way too if you're in affiliate marketing or adsense... You want them to click on the link. If they land on your page, click on the link to whatever you're promoting or on an adsense link, you make money... There's no need for them to go through several of your pages. You make money when they leave your page to go the the sales page for the product you promote or when they click on an ad.

Why would you want a low bounce rate? So they get sidetracked and not click on one of your money-making links?

No, it does not. There's a ton of examples that go against what you say. I'd bet that nearly every seasoned webmaster and SEO has seen websites with bounce rates way above 60% that do just fine.

If your high bounce rate is for the visitors that come from search and bounce back to search, that's a worrying sign. You might be ranking for something not relevant, or your content might suck, or maybe there's some other reason. This kind of bounce rate could also be something that Google monitors.

Really? Ideal? What makes 40% ideal?

Wouldn't 0% be ideal? I mean you're talking about reducing bounce rate and the lowest you can go is 0%.

Let me rephrase: you don't know what you're talking about. I have websites where I'd be making more money if the bounce rate were 100% (adsense and sites where I want them to make a call instantly). I have websites where, ideally, it would be 0% (I want them t fill out a form).
