Problems with HTTP and HTTPS

So I have a very large site selling a lot of products (roughly 7500). The website dev company that we use launched the new updated version of the site a few weeks back.

I have only just noticed that our rankings in Google take us to the HTTP version of the site, not the HTTPS version. However, soon as you click on any link on the site you end up on the HTTPS version.

We have rel canonical on every page pointing to the HTTPS version of the page, but it doesn't seem to make much different.

Is this a problem? And what can be done about it? And the fact that the HTTP version of the site does not automatically redirect to the HTTPS version of the site, will that cause a problem regarding SEO and the flow of PR or "link juice" or what ever people are calling it these days?

It's easy to fix. Get the developer to edit the .htaccess or web.config file to automatically redirect HTTP traffic to HTTPS. It'll take them seconds!

May be Google has not yet cached the https version of the website and thus the same is not getting reflected in the ranking part. Once it will be cached, there will be visibility of ranking for https as well.

First of all, you need to apply a 301 permanent redirect from HTTP version of the site to HTTPS. Ask your dev to confirm it either the redirect has been applied or not. If it is already done, then you don't need to get worry about anything. Wait and let Google to reindex your site with HTTPS urls.

It is a problem if you see the same url twite one with the http version and another with the https version, because then one will be in the supplemental results and the version that ranks is not the one you want to rank, anyway, besides the canonical here are other solutions for your issue:

    a) Use absolute paths http://www.yourdomain.com/shoes/red insread of /shoes/red that will help google to follow the version you want to be shown.

    b) Another solution is to 301 the https version to the http version.

    c) Another version is to modify your .htaccess file creating a new robots.txt file here are better instructions for that:

Lastly, I think you need to see what version is the one that is indexed, because it seems that you just have made the changes and you dont see them immediately, be patience, no changes are immediate.
