Naming of a subdomain

I am in a bit of a pickle of over how to name a subdomain. The domain name itself is short so that is not too much a problem. The specific area of the site will be hosting comparisons but I do not know whether to call it:
hosting.example.com
hostingcomparison.example.com
hosting-comparison.example.com

If I call it "hosting" then this leaves open the possibility of expanding the business into reselling or even actual hosting in the future. If I just call it "hosting" then it may be unclear that it is actually hosting comparison and may not be as good when it gets indexed. If it is hostingcomparisons.example.com then maybe that is too large and also maybe I should put a hyphen.

I suppose I could create another subdomain called "hosting" if I were to branch into that. In that case maybe I should use "hosting-comparisons"... and then maybe I should make it singular... or plural.

If anyone has some advice then it would be appreciated.

  • Ultimately, it won't matter, but I wouldn't niche too tightly unless you have a SPECIFIC plan in place right now.

    If you don't have a plan in place at this moment in regards to your content strategy (A: Why not? B: Don't fall into paralysis of analysis) then just call it hosting and be done with it.

    Choose the best choice for the user, not the search engine. Google will figure it out and to be honest anyways, you should be using subdirectories not subdomains. But that's an entirely different SEO argument that I won't get into right now.

  • I'm with BrianJamesAutority on this one. Unless you have a super compelling reason for putting this on a subdomain, I'm not sure why you would do it. Put it in a directory (folder/category) of the main website where it will help feed the authority of the whole domain. Subdomains do absolutely nothing for helping the main domain rank.
