Niche site and importance of keyword ranking

Hi, not sure if I'm posting this in the right subforum. I was wondering, if you're going to have a niche site, should you focus on ranking high for your niche keyword (with root domain, I guess) as much as ranking for your long-tail content keywords? The latter seems much more doable, and more important for conversion. I'm just curious how much attention you have paid to ranking either in the in the process... Is it still worthwhile if you can't rank well for the niche keyword, while the individual content keywords (thinking they're long-tail) do well enough to end up in the top 3? How likely is that scenario of discrepancy even to happen?

Then there are also primary and secondary keywords. Honestly, I've read SO much about all this that there's a bit of an information overload. How do primary and secondary keywords relate to the niche keyword and long-tail keywords? My view is that primary and secondary keywords are both related to content, and are usually long-tail. Then the niche keyword is, well, as close to the niche as possible, including the domain. However, some people seem to use the term 'primary keyword' for a niche keyword. Perhaps they were talking about micro niches, the terminology might be different there...

Anyway, I hope someone can shed some light on this. Hopefully my message is clear. Many thanks!!

it all depends on the niche you are in

some niches are harder than others to establish a foot hold

I found Google applies different rules to keyword groups that are known for spammy content or what I would call you have no right to be ranking for particular keywords because your not an authority

    For example medical keywords

At one time I could rank for just about any medical keyword, now when I look at search results you only find medical establishments, Doctors etc.. generally websites that are known be legitimate authorities for those types keywords

Things doctors should be answering not some IMer who was good at getting ranked in Google

Other keywords it depends on how long the competition has been working on their rankings

Some keyword groups are open, in recent days and months I've found many keyword groups that with minimal amounts of work I can capture as many as 4 top 10 placements

When this happens I generally push the envelope on what I can do for breaking the rules

I have one niche I dominate that I purposely keyword stuffed the crap out of a few articles and they rank all over for that particular niche

My answer is test and look closely at who your competing against along with are you in a niche that is known to be spammy, because I find Google these days applies different rules depending on the niche

Thanks for such a great reply here. Rankings are really important for a website promotion, I have to say. That is why I always use some services like Rankinity in order to track my webpage rank and improve the traffic. You should learn how to do it too, if you want to promote your website successfully
