Hello my fellow warriors , I am running a new website, and it is going very very well, almost 4 months now and getting good targeted traffic and sales. One of my smart moves, as I really see it , not to look smug at all haha, I just rather to work my hands, and never have bought or built any backlinks and such stuff, I go the traditional way that's my way, I happen to be very good at researching, and also am a skilled writter, so I have built my own stuff, good articles on an average looking website, this proves that it is the content what's working and getting me sales, I trust this method among some other secrets that I keep learning and putting into practice.

So what's my question? ...as you can infere from the title: How to understand this terms today (Backlinks vs Dofollow links) ?

I got this issue since I Keep reading a lot of things about this SEO shortcuts, from the very begenning of my onlone venture I have clear on my mind that backlinking is not safe for the long term health of a website; so, some people say they are not good, some say you should always care about building good bakclinks, some others say "dofollow links", and "nofollow links", are much better than backlinking, so as I was saying, acording to my first research done so many years ago, backlinks are not reliable and offer no guarantee to your site for long term, and they are right, because google now is applying rules against backlinking, but how about dofollow links?..I really don't know much about these SEO shortcuts, but I'd like to get n answer from people that have used dofollow links and bakclinks, people that know these terms and have used these methods, in which I really do not trust, I would like to know the difference between them, how do you define them?

Thanks and please be serious, I know I can google, but I think it is much more useful to ask this questions here at WF, I trust more in what people will tell me here, besides, it saves me lots of time researching and discerning whos telling the truth, and who's covering something that could change the honest view.

Cougar regards!

All links pointing to your site are backlinks. Some backlinks are nofollow (the site owner adds this code to the link: "rel=nofollow" and that's that.

      Thanks Dabk,

Ok I see, so you think that applying this code to place a dofollow carries the same damage to a website that backlinks have? I mean, is google as allergic to dofollows as it is allergic to the common backlinks?

Google is not allergic to any kind of links. It's allergic to you and me using anything, including links, to get high in ranks. If Google had its way, you'd get visitors only from adsense, offline marketing and from random people linking to your great content (having found you through Google adwords, preferably).

You're misunderstanding Google. You want all links coming to your site to be dofollow links and all links from your site to some other site to be nofollow.

Those statements make absolutely no sense.

There's no such thing as dofollow. A regular does not have dofollow.
That would be a "common" backlink.

You cannot force google to do anything, but people seem to think so.

Allergic? Man there is a lot lost in translation here. Could be the root of your problem.

Man...what problem?...I got no problems with this, I am doing it quite ok, I am happy with my results without using backlinks, I am fine, I just opened this thread because I see much info about the backlinking activity, some say it should not be done, some say they use them and are ok with it, so I just want to know the truth about this important SEO feature, (Which now I understand is a very very good SEO TOOL, but somewhat hard to gain by the natural behavior of a site), so I am very interested in what serious people can tell me about it, I need to learn tons of things yet, I may be ignorant at so many things, but I am not ashamed to show my lakck of knowledge, as well as share what I know WORKS no bullshit, just what works!!...I believe in hard work, but also in getting skilled and saving as much time as possibl, sorry if you did not understand my position, again: "I am new to backlinking" ...problem with that?...none my friend!, just lack of knkowledge, but fixing it right now.

Regards and be good! ..ROOOOAARR UP!!

As previously stated, a backlink is a link to your site from another source. It's either dofollow or nofollow. There is no other type of backlink. Another way of thinking about it is dofollow is a type of back link, nofollow is a type of backlink.

So what's the difference? First you need to understand why a backlink might be good. Backlinks are a way for Google to deem your content/website relevant and valuable (amongst other things). A backlink is basically a "vote" for your site.

nofollow link means the link does not flow PageRank or voting power. dofollow means it does. If the link does not have a rel="" attribute (where you would denote if it's nofollow or dofollow) then by default it's dofollow.

The way I usually describe it for people is as follows. Think of a website as a person. If that person has a pagerank of 1 or 2, it's like a trusted citizen. Doesn't hold a lot of voting power but better than a stranger. Pagerank 3 or 4 is like someone respected in the community like a trustworthy news anchor. Pagerank 5 or 6 is more celebrity status and pagerank 7+ is someone very trusted.

Now like I said, a backlink is like a vote. If it comes from a person with pagerank 3 or 4 and is dofollow, the link passes pagerank (or reputation) to the site it's linking to. If the person votes but says "nofollow" it's basically saying, "hey I am voting for this site but I am voting for anonymously" meaning it's not staking it's reputation. So the vote is still a vote but doesn't hold very much weight.

So dofollow means the link passes a bit of the reputation from the site it's coming from, nofollow means it passes no reputation from the site it's coming from. Both would be considered a backlink, dofollow is always better in my opinion.

The key is to not try and cheat the system, that's where Google will slap you if it finds out. If your site becomes popular enough and you did it unnaturally, Google will find out.

Ohh Wooww...thanks so very deeply much Robbeh, you've revealed the whole thing to me in the simplest and yet most usefull way, so now I understand that backlinks are NOT to be bought, but they should be "legally gained" by following the natural, human behavior of a website, now I understand the view, again: backlinks should never ever be bought, and that's what google's policy refers to when they state they got new methods to identify backlinks that shouldn't be there in a suspicious website. Is my conclusion ok?.. all correct or am I missing something?

In the perfect white hat world of Google you are correct - you should never buy links.

But you will find almost no websites do it naturally.

Keeping on the same example, if you buy a vote (or a backlink) from a reputable site (PR of lets say 5), there is no real way Google will know. Just like people in politics and in power are paid off for a vote or to adjust a law.

The problem comes when you buy a link from a site that might seem reputable but because they sell links have been nailed by Google. It's a risk reward game.

You have a misunderstanding on what do follow and no follow links are.

Do follow & No follow links are both types of backlinks.

It doesn't make any sense to say do follow links vs backlinks.

All backlinks will fall into these two categories.

yes man, I know that now thanks to Robbeh who has explained briefly and wondeefully to me how to understand these concepts, so I had that misunderstanding when I opened this thread, now I got the view correctly, I still got some questions though, for example: backlinks are a must for a website to stand out?..you must have backlinks to success online? what happens if a website does not build any backlinks?...

Everyone uses backlinks. Both nofollow and dofollow to increase your traffic and pagerank. Sure, you're free not to use this method but your competitors will. It's up to you how to behave yourself. What can I add...Google loves quality backlinks ;-)

    Backlinks vs. DoFollow Links?

What in the world is this?
There is no point in creating this kind of issue because both parties are one.
DoFollow links is also backlinks. OMG!

Would you mind reading the content of a post before qualifying it and sending negative views which are, to this date, surpassed?..I said I knew anything about backlinking, now I do understand the terms because some friends explained the topic to me very kindly - without horrifying and swearing before my sins - let me tell you: when you enter a forum you must follow some civilized rules, these etiquette rules state you should read at least the final posts of the person who oppened the topic, then you may answer according to precise information this will make your participation useful, I mean, your answer has been surrpassed long ago from now, since I've already been told and tought about backlinking just a few post before yours, time is more precious than gold and courtesy makes us better especially in a discussion forum, please do have this into account.

There is no actual DoFollow tag. The absence of the NoFollow tag makes the link DoFollow. If a blog or web site doesn't use the NoFollow tag, the search engines acknowledge the link; if a site does use the NoFollow tag, the search engines do not acknowledge the link
