How Can I Rank This Idea

I recently came up with a very unique idea involving a service that is commonly offered around the world. The service is a two word keyword with a ton of search results, but I would be trying to rank this service for certain cities probably using a subdomain like this:

city.mysitename.com

Lets say this service is about basketball training. How could I rank the main website for the main keyword of "basketball training" but at the same time rank the subdomain for basketball training in Cleveland. Is this possible / how should I begin doing this?

If using basketball training as your site, then that's your keyword (and variations thereof) for the main site.

City sites would be: "basketball training in Tampa", "Tampa basketball training", etc etc etc

    Do it. Why not?

  • when your doing off page seo use the subdomain as the link and anchor text basketball training in tamp.

And do you offer such a service? Are you an expert on the service?

If not, why clutter the internet up with more junk?

You rank for basketball training in cleveland if you actually are a
basketball trainer in cleveland. If not, you are just creating garbage.

Just a piece of generic business advice. Try to put this idea in front of some business people you trust, or try to do a solid market research by some other means. I've seen several "very unique" ideas that either weren't actually unique from customer's point of view, were replaced by common technology in less than 6 months, or weren't really marketable in any way that would make sense.

Yes, you can certainly try to target different cities across US or even globally. If you want to go outside US consider country TLDs.

If you are targeting different regions, I wouldn't use sub-domains. I'd use a structure like

    example.com/city1
    example.com/city2

    or

    example.com/region/city1
    example.com/region/city2

Is there a specific reason for this? And for the people talking about the idea, it's a unique idea and it's not me offering a service. It's a site built around an already existing and upcoming market. I don't want to go much in detail, but it has nothing to do with basketball training.

Subdomain is a completely separate site. With /city1/ structure you'd have everything under the same site. I'd look at other requirements of the site/product/project, and choose accordingly.

Of course it's possible to build the navigation around both alternatives.
