Hi,

I've just been using a new tool that I've recently developed to analyze the number 2 ranking site in Google for the word 'SEO'.

It has retrieved hundreds of backlinks (unique domains) and the pattern is quite interesting. Unlike many other top ranking sites that have hundreds of articles, blog posts, comments etc.... this site has about 97% of it's backlinks from the footer of the index page only. Mainly using the word 'SEO'.

Now most of these sites ARE unrelated. From lawers to car dealerships etc.

Obviously, it looks like they have carried out SEO work, or even built these sites for all these clients (hosted by the clients own hosting... different IP's).

For such a competitive keyword, it proves that dofollow links in the fotter of the hompage is gold.... and if you have enough of them they do not even have to be relevant sites to your keyword.
Although this isn't by any means a new strategy, it shows that it is a powerful one.

Hmmm... some food for thought.

Andy
