How to best remove content pages with less damage on the SEO ?

Hello.

I'm going to test different marketing strategy so the situation is as follows.

I have my website with content (articles predominantly) and I sell e-books/e-courses.

The articles I use for organic traffic generation and at the end of each I have CTA (call to action) to go to product description page (sales copy page) and then check out page.

However I want to try something different.

Instead of tring to convert the (relatively) cold organic traffic right away into sales, I want to do it in steps with a follow up sequence.

So I want to remove half (even more) of my articles - those that are not well ranked in Google and to transfer them as follow up content for my mailing list.

So the question here is: how to best do it without damaging the overall SEO of the site and the rest of the content that has already been ranked well.

Should I just delete the pages all at once right away?
Should I first noindex them in robots.txt and after a while afther they are not indexed then delete them?
Should I do it one by one in certain period of time or all at once - does this matter?

Any other tips...

Thanks

  • Sounds like you might want to do a 301 redirect. Here is an article describing the different types and how it affects SEO:

Why can't you leave the articles where they are AND use them in your follow up sequence?

Because some people might have found it and read it. I don't want them to read same content. Although they probably wouldn't find it right away on the site since it is burred deep among the pages.

Btw do you think it is better to link in the article or to copy and paste it in the mail?

Generally speaking, just sending articles as part of a mailing campaing isn't that useful, in my opinion. Unless you can write some great intro and tie them to whatever reason they signed up for.

And, if you're going to write an introduction to the article, you might as well summarize the article, give them the option to read the article in full on the site, if it makes sense in the bigger context of what you're doing and if you have the proper calls to action on the article page.

I understand you want to move them one step closer to buying, so what I'm saying might not work for them, given how they got on your list and other variables.

But just sending them articles to read won't move them, or will move a smaller percentage, than writing a series of messages that were written all at once, as one connected, well-thought out ladder from prospect-hood to buyer-hood.

As regards all article, or partial and link to the article... The whole article in the body of the message keeps them focused... But they might hate the idea... Well, fewer will read, but those who do are highly interested.

So, the call to action at the end of the article will get you great leads.

Sending them to another page gives you a chance to lose them in transit, but the ones that bother, say something about themselves.

I can't answer which is better because I don't know what you've done, who they are, how they got to know you, etc.

I can tell you that you need to test. Send, the same day, at the same time, the same message to the first half of your list with the whole article in the body of the email; the other half of the list gets part of the article and a link to read the rest.

Or, if you know how to used your autoresponder's providers a/b testing, do it their way (it's better, more randomized).

Kind of rambling but trying to make the point that you need to think why they signed up to your list before you send them some random articles.

And: reading the same thing twice is not necessarily a bad idea... Sometimes it's just what's needed to make a decision. So, test.

            .

301 is not what this was for. I wish these people would stop
parroting stuff they hear about without any real knowledge.

Noindex has nothing to do with anything either.

              Leave them alone.

Messing around/deleting content on a website is the worst
thing people can do. It upsets the balance for a number of
reasons, too arcane to go into.

Yes thanks, I'll test both versions.

My process of opt-in and follow up is as follows:

              1. Lead comes via Organic trafic (keyword specific)
              2. Lands on content page - article
              3. At end of article is CTA - opt-in for more free stuff (ebook, video etc)
              4. During opt-in there is two question form: Q1 - what is your biggest challange/problem/fear/furstration in that area? Q2 - what result you want to acheive?
              5. Acoring to answers provided and gathered in the period of about 2 months I want to compose my follow up newsletter sequence
              6. Following up constantly with valuable content and proper CTA (for product purchase) at the end.

How do you think about that ?

My steps from 1 to 4 are done and working, I just wonder how to best structure 4, 5 and 6.

              Cheers.

If your articles do, indeed, answer the 2 questions you can form from their responses when they sign up, you can send them the articles.

You should, test which works best for you,
an intro, beginning of article, click here to read whole article
                intro and full article.

I still don't see why you'd take them down.

Your intro could be: I wrote a while back an article on xyz which I think you'd find useful. You can read it on my site...

Yea actually that is the best way so far. - thanks.

Idk btw from SEO point of view if those article that dont have any SEO value (dont appear higher in the SERP neither are optimized) do they affect negatively the overall SEO of the whole site?

Should i only post/keep content that is optimized and eventually well ranked in SERP?

                    No negative impact.

Should anything has to do with your goals. It's always better to optimize your content and increase the chances that it will be found, if you're making sales.

Plus, Google has liked my sites with many pages more than the ones with few.

One off topic question: What is the best bounce rate % that I can have... idealy I mean. I know I can't have 0%. My is about 50 - 53% idk if that is good or bad for a text content site for dating advices.

Don't know. The best I had was low 30's.

But bounce rate is good or bad in relation to what you want them to do.

If you have an affiliate site and people land on one of your pages, then go directly to the purchase page, your affiliate will be 100% and awesomely good.

If, on the other hand, you have a site where you want them to go to your sign up page from the landing page, 0% bounce rate is the awesomest, the equivalent to the perfect conversion rate for affiliate sites.

So, what do you want them to do once they land on one of your pages?
