We are considering moving SEO from in-house to outsourced and need to determine a ball-park estimate for budget. It's for a mid-sized business that manufacturers and sells products in what I would call a "moderately" competetive industry. Not an obscure niche, but not hyper competetive like insurance, loans/banking/investment, lega, etc.

How do companies typically structure their services? Minimum contract length? Base fee + additional per keyword?

I know for more specific costs you need a lot more information but again, I'm just looking for ballpark figures and fee structures we shouldn't be surprised to see. Here are some stats to give a bit more detailed picture as far as where we are and top 3 keywords we want to target:

It's tough to give you specific information without really seeing the site and market you are targeting. Those metrics can be wildly inaccurate.

You will find SEO's charging anywhere from $500-$10,000+ a month.

I have never really charged on a per keyword basis. I take a look at the project in its entirety and offer a customized solution based on that.

Generally, for a decent SEO to work on something that is "moderately competitive" (which in reality could mean a lot of different things), you are probably looking at something in the $1,200-1,800/month range.

What you call moderately competitive though others might think differently of.

Some places might have minimum contracts where you have to sign with them for 12 months or so. I would generally advise to stay away from those. The best SEOs I know offer contracts, but those contracts only lock in the price. The client could leave at any point during the contract.

You have touch competition keywords. It required $10k-15k per month for SEO.
I recommend you find some long tail keywords to easy rank, this will help you reduce the cost and increase conversion rate. You may try Bing ads to get instant traffic with low cost also.

It's a little hard to judge without knowing your website's niche and exact keywords you have in mind, but most SEO agencies have a monthly retainer fee.

Some companies charge by keyword basis while others charge on a general basis. Assuming that whichever SEO agency you decide to go with is legitimate and good, I would have to say that generally SEO on keyword basis is generally more affordable but you may take a longer period of time to see results.

And likewise, under the same assumptions, a SEO service based on the overall requirements etc is generally more expensive but it takes a shorter time to see results.

Some SEO companies offer minimum contract period of 6 to 12 months, while others are on a monthly basis. I would have to say, that whether you go with a (good) SEO company which has a minimum contract period or not, sticking with them for a minimum of 6 months would do you better if you want to see tangible ranking improvements in SEO.

Basically what it comes down to you will have to determine your average customer worth plus closing rate.

    Example:

Say the average worth of a single customer for you is $300.

Let's assume that the SEO will rank you in Google top 3 and that will give you 1000 extra visits per month.

If your closing rate is 5%, that's 50 new customers each month.

    Now, 50x$300 = $15.000

Would that be worth $1500/mo for SEO cost, sure it would provided that you get a decent SEO who can get you ranked within 6-8 months.

PM me if you have any more questions.
