Site with 0 Backlinks Outranking On Decent Competitive Keyword

I have a keyword I plan on ranking that gets around 11,000 monthly searches. I was looking at the competition, and it seems as if my competition has 0 backlinks. The top 2 results do not have any backlinks at all. I have not released my site as I am still tuning it. Why are these sites ranking so high? They even out rank a FDA.gov page with several hundred backlinks? Am I going to be able to outrank them easily when I do release my site?

I would rather not post it. I can assure you that there are 4 backlinks on very shady websites. However, he does have a lot of articles and content. I guess my question is, does content really outdo backlinks that much? He has a lot of Facebook shares as well, approx. 800 shares.

Additionally his domain is extremely old.

I am searching his site with ahrefs.com and majestic. I was under the impression those tools were relatively accurate?

If you can't find backlinks for a page ranking on a competitive keyword they're most likely doing a 301 redirect from another domain/page/URL that you haven't found which will have the authority link profile.

It also could be based on internal links. Neither Ahrefs or Majestic really report on internal links very well.

I aslo think it based on internal links. Many of authority pages rank by a lot of internal links, but it is hard to beat them now. It takes time and money.
