I've only recently started trying to build backlinks to my site and use Ahrefs to monitor progress. I was surprised to see how poor my rank was compared to my competitors, especially as I rank better then them with Alexa. But then my ranking dropped another 5 millions places on one night and I wondered what could have caused this. The only things I can think of are that I've suddenly become a lot more active in building links and that the vast majority of my backlinks are from one site who I do work for and as part of that they reciprocate with a link to my site from their homepage. About four months ago the link was made 'no follow' to avoid making it look bad to Google. Should I ask them to remove the link all together, or do you think it sounds like this wouldn't be the reason for my poor rankings?

Alexa is a completely useless metric and has nothing to do with links. I would not worry about it.

I had my doubts about Alexa too, which makes my problems with my ahrefs ranking even more serious.

Mutual link exchange is not recommended. One way link building is the only way to rank well. Regarding Alexa, the rank is based on the traffic of the website which is a completely different metric for ranking.
I am using ahrefs tool to check my backlinks, working well for me and have never found any problem with the tool. Sometimes the tools crashes, there is always an online help who responds to our queries when there is a problem with the tool or in ahrefs rankings. I suggest to remove all the links as part of mutual link exchange and try build quality contextual one way back links to your site

I probably didn't explain very well. The links aren't mutual they are all one way i.e. to my site, but in return for that I have done other unrelated work for the owners of the site.
