Is backlinks from Facebook and Twitter effective?

Before this, I kept reading that I need to promote my website on social media and forum for backlinks. However, after reading several threads in this forum, I've learned that forum marketing won't help SEO, at least directly. Which makes me wonder, does backlinks from Facebook and Twitter count into getting your ranking on G?

Google is pretty vague when it comes to answering questions about Social Media and no one knows exactly how Google uses Twitter or any other social media data in rankings. Matt Cutts confirmed that currently Google does take into account social media signals and might use in the future.

Links from Facebook and Twitter will increase your ranking. But not too much...

Question is: how much WEIGHT will social media put on your OVERALL ranking. Backlinks from high quality authoritative blogs and corporate/business/institution sites will have more weight on you than social media. Social media is good for measuring how much people TRUST and ENGAGE with your content but it has minor impact. Only way your social media page will help you is if your page is super active and is driving lots of traffic to your website. But then again....it will still have minor impact if there are other sites linking to you or competitors.

Social media is very HELPFUL with DRIVING or REFERRING traffic your website, but for ranking? not really. It contributes to your ranking in a somewhat small way.

The answer is probably yes... The popularity, relevance and credibility of a website can be measured by its social media activity, comments and shares. If there is a good amount of traction on this, Google recognises it as a relevant website and increases the rankings. The exact amount of how much it would help is still unclear since Google never revealed the information, but chances are it is a really good bet to maintain social activity.

I use those SEO scan tools, and some show my SM links and some say there's none. So it's quite confusing.

Obviously I will keep with it as it can't do any harm....but not entirely sure it does any good....

Anyway, social presence is really important, but don't expect back-links from them as they are no follow unfortunately.
