Is it possible to decently rank a ccTLD domain (non-English) with English content?

Guess the title says it all.

For example, let's suppose I own a .gr domain (belongs to Greece), but I intend to use English content on it. Question is, will it work with SEO/Google? How good or bad vs. a .com or similar domain? Accordingly with Google, such domains are already bound to a specific language and region, however I wonder if they can do acceptable with English too.

I've had this question for long time. My reason is that I own a ton of currently unused domains with lots of inbound links, I'd rather use them for some fresh blogs and/or link juice. But I'm interested in English content only.

I would particularly appreciate any advice coming from direct experience in this matter - someone that actually tried and used such domains for the same purpose.

Thank you!

Hmm, I've already got a response on another forum from someone that already did it several times.

It seems that they are devalued from start. My past tests also have shown that although it is possible to rank, the results aren't impressive. But I was never sure about it as I lacked confirmation from another source.

I'm thinking like building something in the original language, then use them to link to my other sites. The domains have plenty of IBL's, like 100 to 300 per domain, not bad neighborhoods, so they worth a try. I'm also considering adding an English section as well and linking to my other domains from there, for better targeting.
